I have a quick question about tail fins. Do they do anything flightwise or are they just pretty additions to the helio?

Maybe I should tell a little about the reason for my question. I am in the middle of making an aluminium tail motor mount for my AXE, and I am trying to decide if I should incororate the vertical fin mount into the design.

I am new to actually owning and learning to fly heilo's, but I have been a machinist for 18 years. I own my shop and feel it is my destiny to make parts for myself.

So as i break them, I am looking to replace them with machinied parts.

I guess a better way to ask is: will the AXE ( or any other model ) fly the same with or without the tail fins?

The vertical fin keeps the tail rotor from hitting the ground, and provides some stability in forward flight. Same with the horizontal fin (as far as stability in FF, doesn't do a thing as far as tail rotor strikes!)

They also create havoc in the wind! And if you are running the rate gyro, really makes it fun in the wind! (think sail!)
