I should let you know that if you have alot of kids playing with the r/c boat for the first time you might want to make a launching handle for the XP-2 . I'd hate to hear of any kids missing a few fingers because they forgot about where the prop is . I also mentioned it to Tony at WWH .

Great idea Dana. I accidently got my hand in an airplane prop about 20 years ago. Yes stitches were involved. The engine was idling and it was a nylon prop. If it had been a boating incident, I would be missing fingers

I also like that idea....even for myself!
Here's the first glass layup of the canopy.

Looks good .
So tell me . When you have a class project like an R/C boat . Does the whole class make one boat ? or does each student make a boat as there own project ?

Dana, I have kids of all different skill levels and interests. Everything from special needs kids to advanced placement. I cater to all their skill levels. This boat has been a class project. Since I supervised the build, everybody had their hands in this hull. But to answer your question, I only built one. The year is now over and this was a last minute build. The school paid for the hardware, engine..etc. so they now own it. I just donated the material to build the hull. I created a special label for their hull. Now each one I build from here out is for sale as it gives me something to do over the summer break. Have three to complete so far!

Oh almost forgot....Dana, I found a LOCAL very large fiberglass boat repair shop about 5 miles down the road from me. They took me on a tour of the shop and aren't interested in making a prophit on the small materials I will be buying there as they will divide up the barrels of resins they have and other materials if I bring my own containers. $20/gallon resin, $0.40/yard for 8oz 2" tape, $7/gallon for PVA....oh, I'm gonna be busy. The hull I'm now making that I sprayed a couple days ago is for me. Will be painted and finished with clearcoat, wetsanded and polished. Hey, why should the kids have all the fun???

Another lower complete.

Ran out of cloth so I finished the nose with another layer of mat, but used .75oz instead of the 1.5oz the 1'st layer is made of. Probably better off anyway. Trimmed and cleaned up using the lip as a guide ensures a perfect alignment with the top deck.

LOL now your learning . Could be one of three things :
Gelcoat was to thin
Gelcoat was not fully cured
Room temp was to cold
OK maybe one more , your humdity was to high .

That's a very good price on your materials . Stay good friends with that business .

OK.....I attempted a spray but would barely come out of the gun. Poured the can back and added more thinnner. Sprayed very good and had a nice thick build. I only sprayed one coat since the gelcoat will not be the final finish. It was sprayed 40 hours before I started laying glass. The temperature was between 70 - 80 degrees the past few days since I sprayed. I'm going to guess I made an error and added too much thinner? I know I waited long enough to cure the gelcoat. It was a little humid the day the glass was laid. Didn''t know that could be a factor. Perhaps I need to lay the gelcoat thicker than I already did. I'm still going to use the part, nothing a little bondo can't take care of! The fit is perfect, but may be a little tight once paint is layered on.

Oh, all three parts were sprayed the same time....hopefully stopped with the canopy....(was the 1'st item sprayed). 95% of that canopy came out perfect.

THINNER ? There's your problem . If you have to thin the gel coat to get it through the gun then use Duratec Additive . It will work great to thin it enough . In my opinion if you use anything else ( like acetone ) your asking for trouble .
