Guys,

The Aerotech Catalina is 88" although the plans says 91". Recommended weight is about 12 lb (192 once)

I have done the math and taking into consideration the taper i think I have about 1010 square inches thats gives a potential wing loading of 19 onces per square inch which seem quite good (correct me if im wrong)

I have the plans, blisters and front look out pod etc - does anybody have any experience of knowledge of the Aerotech Catalina? If so I would like to hear from you - Im not sure whether to drop some radio and a pair of OS46 LA's in it and fly it before a repaint and water proof or let it go? I have the Budd Chappell cat as well . . .

12 lbs and 1010 sq. in. equals 27.43 oz per sq. ft. And you say it is 11.5 lbs without the engines and radio!?!!

I wouldn't spend a minute or a farthing on it.

I though the larger planes were able to fly just as well even with a larger wingloading? (stretching . . . )

1000 sq. in. is not a "large" plane, but it would fly OK at 27 oz/sq. ft. IF the wing is well designed to avoid tip stalling.

But you are at 11.5 lbs empty. Add 2 lbs for the engines, props, tanks, etc, and another 1.5 pounds for the radio equipment plus ??? for the nacelles, cowls, bubble windows and turret, and you are over 15 pounds. Now the wing loading is 35+. Then add the weight of a repaint and you have a very marginal flyer, and a guaranteed stall spin if you ever lose an engine.

As I said, I wouldn't waste any time on it, but you may want to take on the challenge. If so, I'm sure it will be interesting and educational and I wish you the best of luck.

Jim
