Scary(ish) Futaba 9Z failure
Have a look at the pics and spot the problem.
For those that aren't 9Z users, the aerial is not supposed to be removable. It looks like the plastic that the aerial is bolted to has snapped and allowed the aerial to be pulled out. I dread to think what may have happened had I not noticed[X(]
Now I am transmitterless for a jet meet mid April that I was working so hard to get my new Bobcat ready for[&o]

Aren't there a couple screws that clamp the swivel-ball thingy in place? If so, you may want to pop the swivel-ball out and see how it failed. Maybe it's just a matter of resoldering the lead to the threaded portion? Mind you, I do not have a 9Z...
Good Luck... [8D]
Another option is to convert to 2.4GHz right away, and bypass the antenna.

that's not a huge problem, there should be a plastic washer under that screw which has broken. the tx will have to be partialy disassembled to replace it. this is done through the back, not the top.

I have had a look in the back but can't get the circuit board off to get to the antenna mount. In doing all this I have broken one of the little circuit board plugs. It will definately have to go back now[&o]
The aerial mount is the only part of the 9Z that I really do not like.
2.4 is definately what I want to do but I want to stick with Futaba, need at least 8 channels and if purchasing a new set would like it dedicated 2.4 (and not module based with a sticky out antenna). Also the 8 Channel RX want be out in time and I'm not too keen on th 14 channel RX at the moment.
I guess there's no alternative but to just sit it out and wait for mine to be fixed.

Just for your info, the 8 channel modules and receivers have arrived in the UK and should be in the shops by next week.

I think you would be happy with the module based unit. I have a 9Z just like yours and a 14mzh. I converted the 14mzh to 2.4 just yesterday. The advantage of the module based is that I don't have to convert my entire fleet over at one time. I can do it in stages. You have a module on your 9Z so it's not really any different than what you have now with the exception of the antenna in the Tx.

When I had my 9Z I carried an extra antenna in my field box.
That mounting screw can be accessed from the battery box without removing anything more than the battery.
As was mentioned there is a small plastic washer that is slightly bigger than the antenna diameter missing that you should be able to make out of something.
The first time I had to replace my antenna I also took the whole TX apart only to find out that it was not necessary to do do so.
Did you actually break one of the connectors or just pull out the ribbon wire? If the ribbon wire came out, it is supposed to. It just plugs back in.
