Hi,
I'm looking to build/fly a low wing plane for sport flying and can't decide between a Hog or a 4*60. Which one is better in terms of building, flying characteristics, quality of the kit, laser cut/die cut, etc...?

Any inputs are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have an Astro Hog and I really enjoy flying the plane. It was a bit of work, but I love to build. The Hog flys very smooth and graceful, and get a lot of compliments on how it looks and performs in the air. Landing are just as graceful as its ability to cruise. I built it as a trike but wish I had built it as a til-dragger.

I'd look at it this way. The Hog is a great airplane for a 4 stroke, while the 2 stroke is more fitting for the 4*60. I have flown both, and I actually like the 4* better for the way it flies, but the Hog is a nicer looking plane. Both planes are floaters, and don't like much wind. If it were me, I'd go with the 4* and build it with a few mods to make it look a little nicer. Hope that helps.

Both planes are good fliers, however the Hog is an older design and a builders kit. The Hog is a lot more work building than the 4*. The 4* on the other hand, is laser cut and builds fast and true.

Thanks.

I agree that the Hog does look better, but I'm looking for one that builds reasonably fast. My last kit was all laser cut, so I'm kind of spoiled. Looks like the 4*60 is the winner then.

Thanks for all your inputs.

I think you can get the 4* as an arf. Have to diagree with Not24--I think the 4*'s are great candidates for 4 cycle engines. I have one now, a 60 with an OS 91. Second one I've had, and I had a 40 size with a Saito 56. Both were and are great fliers. For a while I needed the 91 on a different plane so installed a ST .61 on the 4*60. Flew it fine, but I still prefer the four cycle engines. In the end, you fly it with whatever you like for power. There is a thread somewhere on RCU that has a lot of modified 4*--cowlings, shorter wings, rounded tails, different canopy etc, etc. Fine for the guys that like to go to the work, but I would save my energy for a more suitable plane if I was going to make a bunch of mods. Just my opinion.
