Slow Low -> 1/7th Scale Composite Warbird P-40E Warhawk Build (3/29/2008 5:00:15 AM)

Hello Everyone - I also posted over in composites, but now that I've looked around a little bit, I don't see alot of you warbird types over there so here we go...I have to admit to being a quiet observer for some time now, but I've just posted a video on youtube of my ongoing build of an all composite warbird. It's a 1/7th P-40E Warhawk. I don't know how much interest there is for this sort of thing, but you can feel free to watch the video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ge3yw99b9g You can also search for composite warbird. I know how helpful it can be to see pictures of someone elses methods - so if this helps even one person, it will be worth the typing - nice to meet ya - let me know what you think; I don't see alot of us warbird enthusiasts building with composites
...please be nice[:)]

Hey Slow Low...

Awesome stuff! Your P40 looks like a Top Flite kit. Although I havent build one, there are a lot of bits in there that are a dead ringer for my Mustang.

Amazing composite work, you obviously know what you are doing. I am interested in this stuff so please keep going...

Cheers and welcome

Goose

Great stuff! Keep going! I'm working now on similar project - 1:6 Yak-3, so I'm in!

skull1971 -> RE: 1/7th Scale Composite Warbird P-40E Warhawk Build (3/30/2008 3:21:42 AM)

Dude post away, I'm thinking about a P-40, just not sure how big I want to go. 1/7th that's what? 60 size? I'm thinking Ziroli, but if I was to come across something else, who knows. The P-40 holds a special place in my heart, when I was young, about 10, my dad was friends with a Flying Tigers pilot. I don't remember his name, but I do remember some of the stories, some good, some bad, but that's war. The one thing that I remember is that all his stories were around the P-40. The Skyshark is out, it's a N model, I want an E, and I've already had my run in's with them and will not ever do business with them again!

Thanks Guys - Hey Goose just a quick tip of the hat for a fellow Canadian eh!
lz-23 Got a thread going?

Hiya Skull - I'm with you on the N - that tail's just a little too far rear to be attractive
60 size - you got it
My next one will be bigger - I just updated solidworks to 2008 and was thinking about getting started so I can get the balsa on the cnc router - but that's another story - I like that Ziroli, but I might go a touch larger depending on the weight that comes out of these moulds - we'll see, either way the solid model will be parametric and scaleable anyway.
Those stories from your Dad - I'd kill to hear one man.

skull1971 -> RE: 1/7th Scale Composite Warbird P-40E Warhawk Build (3/30/2008 3:40:01 AM)

Who cares about the weight!!![:@] just put a 350 chevy in the nose."With enough horsepower you can make a brick fly."[:D]

Slow Low -> RE: 1/7th Scale Composite Warbird P-40E Warhawk Build (3/30/2008 3:46:53 AM)

LOL - Ya but you gotta be able to buy a prop with enough pitch to clear the ground on takeoff!!![sm=wink_smile.gif]

skull1971 -> RE: 1/7th Scale Composite Warbird P-40E Warhawk Build (3/30/2008 3:51:43 AM)

Nah, just need big tires, and lot's of pitch on the prop. No Guts No Glory!!

Are you going to sell these?

Slow Low -> RE: 1/7th Scale Composite Warbird P-40E Warhawk Build (3/30/2008 3:51:56 AM)

I've got a nice 350 SB though - supercharger and all - Don't get me going, next I'll be going 1/2 scale with quick change mounts to the car !!

Slow Low -> RE: 1/7th Scale Composite Warbird P-40E Warhawk Build (3/30/2008 3:55:17 AM)

I've been known to help out a buddy - shoot me an email at b1heqh54@rogers.com sometime

skull1971 -> RE: 1/7th Scale Composite Warbird P-40E Warhawk Build (3/30/2008 4:01:54 AM)

They make a kit you can buy,,hehehe, wink wink, nuge nuge, ya know what I mean?!?!
I'm a diesel tech here in Texas, and all I do is engines, so I too can make some HP, and noise, I like noise!
Great car, Rag top man huh?

What about retracts?

But really if your going to market them let me know. PM me because RCU frowns on business in the open fourms.

Ya beat me[:D]

lz-23 -> RE: 1/7th Scale Composite Warbird P-40E Warhawk Build (3/30/2008 4:05:56 AM)

Can you post more pics here? Will be nice to see more of your bird.

skull1971 -> RE: 1/7th Scale Composite Warbird P-40E Warhawk Build (3/30/2008 4:08:02 AM)

Uhh? the p-40 right?

Slow Low -> RE: 1/7th Scale Composite Warbird P-40E Warhawk Build (3/30/2008 4:24:38 AM)

Skull, I see you're from Willis - reminds of a time I flew into Fortworth in the middle of the night to drop some prototype car parts off at a plant that can't be too far from you, but I'll be danged if I can remember the name right now (it'll come to me as soon as I press OK) anyway, I got stuck on a toll highway going around in circles for hours and it cost me a small fortune in pocket change (actually I ran out and had to dodge a few cameras in a rental as I recall) and I missed my return flight home - cost me another $150 to get on a different plane - what's up with all the tolls down there?
...more pics - hmm - well I did some preliminary layup parts to try and project some weights and the wing just got wheel bays for the retracts (two answers one stone c that?!) I started the build with flaps and no retracts because I'd heard of a few of these Gold Edition Kits that built heavy, but I decided to go ahead with the retracts - here's a pic of that
So the mould timeline just got a little longer...and I really do hope that I got enough draft in there to release from the mould :)

skull1971 -> RE: 1/7th Scale Composite Warbird P-40E Warhawk Build (3/30/2008 5:06:49 AM)

S.L. Willis is near Houston, 300 miles from Ft.Worth. Now I grew up in the Dallas, Ft. Worth area, and don't really remember to many toll roads. Back in the early 70's we had some, and now they have the North dallas tollway, and that new George Bush. I moved out in 94 so things are a little different now. The GM plant is still in Arlington as far as I know, is that where you went? Now DFW airport, come to think of it, has toll roads, and I have gotten lost on them too.

James it's gotta have retracts, it just won't look right otherwise, and if it's heavy, all jokes aside, up the engine. I'd put a Saito 100 in it, BUT a 125 is the same size in the mount, and more power. Or an OS 75 would be sweeet.

LDM -> RE: 1/7th Scale Composite Warbird P-40E Warhawk Build (3/30/2008 5:11:52 AM)

great job the P40 is my all time favoriate plane , keep posting [:D]

Slow Low -> RE: 1/7th Scale Composite Warbird P-40E Warhawk Build (3/30/2008 5:18:11 AM)

It's like you can read my mind Skull - you're not RH Neg blood type are you?
PS - the George Bush was part of the circuit - lol

Slow Low -> RE: 1/7th Scale Composite Warbird P-40E Warhawk Build (3/30/2008 5:19:12 AM)

Thanks LDM

skull1971 -> RE: 1/7th Scale Composite Warbird P-40E Warhawk Build (3/30/2008 6:11:19 AM)

Couldn't tell you what blood type I am, all I know is it's red [:D]

They built the G. Bush after I left town, BUT I did get caught on it too, once. When I go back now, I just take teh old roads I know, it may be longer, but I'm not lost. OH by the way I love the Tony Tiger, box in the video. That's great,,, or "They're Grreat!!" a Flying Tiger builder, powered by Tony Tiger.[:D]
