I purchased a Bantam BC6 new at my LHS and while it seems to be working properly, I've noticed that it gets very hot during the charging process. I'm charging 6cell Team Orion 4500Mah RocketPack NiMh packs that have TRX connectors and my charger is connected by banana plugs, 16 gauge silicon wire, and TRX connectors. The charge rate is 4.5A. The temps of the metal case are reaching 113F. This is in a well-ventilated room with an ambient temp of 76F and the charger is on its rubber feet on a smooth hard surface with no vents blocked.

Question is, should I be worried?

Dirk

Hi Dirk,

The unit will get warm to slightly hot depending on the amperage being charged. I will set one up here at the shop and see how hot it gets. My larger nicad packs are 2400 8 cell packs, but I can charge them a rate to equal the 33 watts you are outputing.

My thanks for your reply...

It's my understanding that the BC6 has no cooling fan and that the aluminum case is going to act as a heatsink to a certain extent. I just want to make sure I'm not approaching temperature levels that I shouldn't be. I may want to use this charger trackside this summer and I live in Texas - and it gets pretty hot here. I plan to purchase a pair of 7cell 4600Mah NiMh side-by-side packs in the near future followed by a pair of 5000 or 8000Mah LiPo packs later on, so I may be charging at rates closer to (and possibly including)5A for even longer periods of time.

The BC6's components are using the metal body as a Heat Sink.

the board itself has 2 Regulators that are in direct contact with the bottom plate.

Charging at high rate will get the regulators pretty hot but its normal, the Heat sink is doing its job, nothing to worry about.

Best Wishes,

Dan

The direct contact explains the temps getting a bit high, so I'll try to stop worrying... It's just that at 113F it's hot enough to not want to touch it! I'm assuming the plastic touch-sensitive keypad & the LCD screen can deal with these temps?
