Racking G oogle and this forum up & down but not coming up with anything. What connection is needed from the charger to lipo? I was a hair away from charging up like a normal nicad/nimh pack but then read thats a no-no.

Can you show me a pic of the connection?

Here are my cells.

Thanks, Jamie

Doubledog:

There are various manufacturers out there with different style plugs, from small cheepies (JST) and what most people end up with, the "Deans" connection, red colored. It is good for large amps, stays togeather and reasonable if purchased in bulk compaired to some of the fancier $7.00 each jobs. This is a good overall plug to use as a standare for all your connections, charger to battery, battery to controller. You should bet 10-12 complete connections male and female. Try United Hobbies for decent quality reasonable priced connectors and also purchase some bullet connectors for your controller to motor connections. ENJOY

Doubledog, Deans are the way to go, and not to assume you don't know but be sure to solder the 'female' Deans to the battery leads, this prevents any possible shorts of the LiPo pack through contact with metal etc.

Len, I use Deans on my cars etc so yeah, I'm a tad familiar with them. My main question is how do you charge the packs like in my first picture? Do you use the small multi-wire connection or use the standard red/black?

Thanks a bunch, Jamie

Hi Jamie -

You can charge a lipo using the large red/black wires (the output wires). In fact, that's how all lipos were charged at one time. Now, however, most manufacturers include a multipin balancing connector, and that's what you should normally use for charging. A balancer or balancing charger assures that the cells in your lipo pack all stay very close to the same voltage. The balancing connector allows the charger/balancer to monitor each cell individually and keep them all at the same voltage.

Without balancing, it's possible for the cells in a pack to assume different voltages, possibly leading to overcharging of one or more of the cells. When this happens, the cell can be permanently damaged, even to the point of catastrophic failure. Balancing minimizes the chance of such events.

To date, battery and charger makers have not agreed on a standard multipin connector for charging/balancing. Some of the better chargers and balancers have a selection of adapters available, allowing them to charge a wide variety of batteries. Assuming you decide to balance your lipos, you will want to get a charger or balancer that is compatible with (or has an adapter for) the multipin connector on your batteries.

- Jeff
