Here's the long awaited solution, upgraded side rails that come ready to fit and steering arm solution.

$100.00 for the side rails, $30.00 for the steering arm. Plus shipping.

Buck, this is yours and it will go out early next week, and Billy, your order is complete, let me know if you want the steering arms.

PS, this is mocked up, the set screws will be flush when we get them.

Nice work Sean. That sure looks like a solid solution.

In looking at your photos, I need to shout out to all those who have, or are waiting on gear detail from me...the steering arm that Sean shows above will interfere with the detail work on the nose gear.
My upper detail sleeve goes up halfway between the two set screws that secure the pin in the top of the nose strut. Just a head up.
The top of the sleeve almost reaches the side rails. (see pic)

Paul, can there be a solution based on your work to integrate the solution Joe came up with? If so, how would you propose to do it?

Can you draw an idea up?

Not sure without seeing exactly where you have positioned your tiller arm.
It appears you're only contacting the aft circumference of the strut. It may be possible to remove a upper rear section of my upper detail sleeve to facilitate using that tiller arm.
Overall shortening the sleeve to only go up to the tiller arm would not look good at all. It's already marginal from a scale "ground level" angle (as far as the detail dissapearing up into the well).
Might not be as noticeable if the front of the detail work was still there.
The upper detail tube must slide down from the top during assembly (along with the uppermost retaining ring with set screw), so the tiller arm would have to remain detached until the last step.
The reason it all has to slide from the top down is because the struts very lower end is painted, and that paint thickness will not allow any of the components to slide on from the bottom.
The tolerances are so tight that even the smallest deformations to the strut from set screws, burring from the retainer rings set screw bores, etc. immediately inhibit the free movement of the components up and down the shaft. This is such a probelm that I have lately been painting the nose strut and detail fully assembled.

Can you post a pic of the arm area close up, in relation to the two set screws it the top aft end of the strut? Does your strut rotate 180˚ in the trunion, or are you still utilizing the stock tillers as an anti-rotation device?
The further I look at your pics, I'd say that the detail going up only as far as the base of your tiller appears the only solution.

Long windidly yours ,
Paul

Nice job Sean!!! Count be in on the steering arm too. Can it be welded on or is the set screw thing pretty strong? I will collect the rest of the guy's money next weekend. I'll send you the check then. Thanks for all the work you put in.

Hey what size are the holes in the arm? Is there enough meet to tap a 10/32?

Billy

It's double tapped 4-40 right now. I gave it the ole hand pull test and it was pretty stout. If you want to increase it later, my all means, go ahead, but I'm pretty happy with it myself, if it was mine, I'd fly it.

Nice job Sean! Paul, from your pictures and Sean's it doesn't look like a conflict. It looks like the tiller arm can be "set" comfortably above the scale piece you make.

Joe

It looks that way but, upon retraction, my detail work is only 1 millimeter from the side rails.
I can't really tell exactly where he has them in the pics, but on the detail work, I have an access hole about 1/8" below the top edge of my upper tube to access the lower of the two upper pin set screws.
In studying his pics closer, it may not be as intrusive as I thought...might only require cutting of the top 1/8"-1/4" of the detail.

Also, Sean's pic looks like Gen1 gear based off of the oleo (like your first ones Joe) so I may be looking at oranges and comparing my apples to them.

Lovely job! Is the steering arm designed for a mechanical linkage or cables? - John.

Only cables, if anyone wants to invest in direct drive for this airplane, please let me know, I have at least one option for less than $250.00 that is very robust.

Well,
If Greg thinks it will work out, then we'll let him determine whether the detail will get in the way.
I really hope so because it sure looks like a much improved set-up.
Sorry to step on your thread with the red flag action Sean.
As always, you da mang!
Paul
