This engine was given to me from someone I work with & he knows nothing about it. It had sat for years without any after-run so before running it I dissasembled it & cleaned it up to remove all of the gunk in the engine. From what he told me it has been run very little & now that I have it reassembled it seems to have excellent compression & the bearings are very smooth. The cylinder & case are made to be either side or rear exhaust. The head is black annodized. I would like to know value, Specs, year of mfg., what type of fuel, & what size prop. Here are some pics. The #s on the bottom are 1403 on one side & a letter P on the other.

Hi: Richard here in Scappoose, Oregon. Connect with Dar Zeelon at: ddzeelon@israsrv.net.il for answers to your questions. Also, mvvs.nl/mvvs/main_bestanden/glow.htm will give you a listing of all the sizes of the mfg engines from the past. Unless noted, these engines were designed to use FAI fuels, but could live on 5% nitro fuels. I added shims to all I had in an estate inventory to increase the nitro to 10% fuels. These engines are screamers with the tuned pipes. You may want to keep this engine. Good luck, and have fun.

Bjmjs,

It appears to be a completely normal MVVS #3066 6.5 cc engine, from about 15 years ago.

The carburettor is the very old version, seems to have a 7 mm bore and there are no parts available for it (it will have a rich mid-range, but good transition from idle to full). But there is still everything available for the engine.

Those notations are from 'before my time', so I cannot know if they have any meaning, or what it is.

In the year 2000, MVVS started renumbering with "A". So if "Z"was 1999, P is 1989.
The rich midrange can be cured with a new spray bar set (spraybar + idle needle), that brings the carb up to par with any other two-needle carb in the market whilst having better idle than any carb I know.

Pé,

I am not sure that 'upgrade kit' would be enough...

This carburettor has the older, internal thread high-speed needle.
The replacement must also include a new high-speed needle.

Are you sure the carburettor body is identical to the previous generation carburettor?

From my own experience, that carburettor, even with the new 'upgrade kit', does not behave as nicely as does the new carburettor.
Not even close!

Dar, looking closely at the picture, I see the thick external thread type main needle. I believe that the thin external thread needle with bent end is for the venturi engines only. When I started out in 2001, we got one old 6.5 with loose front shaft. They had the standard carbs, but without the redesigned bell mouth and improved midrange spray bar.
I am not 100% sure about the pre-1994 engines though. When ordering a set, it would be wise to include the main needle just to be sure.

As long as you're on the MVVS 6.5 topic, how does one tell the "q500" version that was sold for a while from the regular version? I know the tuned muffler was a little shorter, what other differences would one look for?

Pé,

I began later than you and the first 6.5 engines I sold were already the newer design, with the new carburettor and with a blue (or gold) head and prop-driver. I actually sold no 6.5 engines, except many Quickies.

I own an older, neutral finish 8.0 GFS/R, which came with the mid-generation carburettor.
This carburettor already has the black needle with an external thread.

Please look at the last photo, which shows the engine from the front-left side... That 'springy' needle has a housing that threads onto the nozzle, just like the current low-speed needle, with an internal thread in the housing...

I exchanged the spray-bar and low-speed needle in my engine, but this never completely 'fixed' the rich mid-range...

Two years ago, I installed the new #3216 on it and its throttle response is now rheostatic. Even with the 'upgrade kit', it ran in four-cycle at anything below 40% throttle, to just off-idle.
Now it runs at two-cycle mode, from 1,800 RPM to 12,500 (11.5x5 Bolly) and everywhere in between.

It still uses the original C-6S plug. It never burnt-out, or became 'crusted'.

Fizz,

The Quickie has a longer exhaust duration (~180º in latest sleeves - ~170º in the previous version), a larger carburettor bore (9 mm in the latest version - 8 mm in the previous blackhead versions), better bearings (WIB Swiss racing bearings) and as P found out, the Quickie also has a slightly smaller crank-pin diameter, for increased oil clearance.

The #3246 tuned muffler is necessary to be on-boost at Quickie type RPM levels. The standard #3248 is only good up to ~15,500 RPM.

Thanks, Dar - so on the great auction site, if one finds a MVVS6.5 there's no real way of knowing if it's the Q500 version unless it's NIB and properly marked - you'd really have to look at exhaust timing and carb ID.

We don't run much of our MVVS class racing around here any more, it's mostly 424 and 428, but every once in a while we do have a race for the MVVS and Rossi powered planes.

Thanks for the info,

Fizz,

If it is a new version and has a gold anodized head and prop-driver, it is for sure a Quickie (or began its life as one).

If it is a new version and has a blue anodized head and prop-driver, you cannot know for sure, unless you check the items... The larger carburettor can be externally identified in the photos, however.

Not to argue; I am not 100% sure, so:
This is the needle that he needs if he wants to change to the new cured midrange setup.
The second picture is the spray bar assy with needle, but without the spring

No arguing here either...

I am just saying the replacement of the needle-nozzle assembly, in the case of this specific, older carburettor, would also require the new high-speed needle (and its 'clicker' spring)...

I was also asking if the new nozzle fits into this very old body... and if the replacement of all these separate components would be cost-effective... If the replacement of the carburettor in its completion would not be a preferable solution...

This carburettor has its sealing O-ring at the bottom of the spigot; i.e. below where the draw-bolt holds it in the crankcase.
There is no additional O-ring under the body...

Now that you mention it, I remember seeing such a carb. I may have one around and if I have, can check dimensions.
