A bit more progress yesterday.

Fuel proofing and stringers added to fuselage. Wing covered.

I ordered a Quaker 54 two weeks ago and have been following your build. This is my first old timer build. The wood and the plans are both great. I have the fuselage, tail feathers and wing ready for sanding before final assembly and covering. It has been a fun kit to build. I also ordered the Dallaire and can''t wait to start the build on it, but there''s a lot of wood in the Dallaire box.

I've started on mine also, got the fuse almost done. Anybody know if this Quaker is SAM legal for LER glow? I've been reading the rules, and apparently you can scale planes up or down, but does the sclaed model need some sort of "official" approval before it's allowed to fly? There's some SAM activity in Louisiana and Oklahoma, not much here in North Texas, unfortunately, but I want to have a couple of planes flying to have fun with AND practice some LER flying, as that particular event sounds like a blast..

It looks great. My favorite thing about pylon models is that they don't have windows. I always screw them up. Yours look super.

Woohoo! Ready to fly. Wobbly bits wobble, noisy bit makes noise, co-pilot approves! Balances on the spar. Hope for no wind tomorrow.

Very neat build.I also have a Quaker at home that's done about 20 flights and each time I commit it to the sky a smile crosses my face.
I built the Ben Buckle kit and power it with an OS 30 FS,flies great,ample power.
The only major modification I made was to reduce the incidence on the empennage and match it to that of the wing.My theory being that the original was intended for FF and therefore had to have a high + incidence angle to climb away steeply.
I made no adjustments to the engine thrust angle and to my delight it was not needed as there is alomost no noticeable effect.
Normally my good freind hand launches my little creation as he's very good at that but I've now also managed to do running take-offs,although that little plane has a mind of it's own when you resort to that method of getting airbourne and it's normally a case of forewarning my fellow modellers before take-off so they know what to expect!
Well,I wish you the best of luck with your Quaker and may she bring you as much joy as mine did to me.

Ahh, the great old Quaker 54. I had a couple or three of these, back in the late 1970s. Back then the 54" version was kitted by the well known "Fast Richard" Mathis of Flying Models magazine article fame, under the M&P (Mathis and Peadon) models lable. We sold this kit (I used to work at The Hobby Market, in Fort Worth..anyone remember them?.. ..) and the 7 foot kit as well.

My first Q54 succumed to a bad elevator servo and the second to an overstressed wing. (Not by me...I was letting a freind fly it...easy to fly, but the balsa spar was not quite up to snuff for a ham handed beginners dive recovery.... ..)

I still have some parts around. One wing and a damaged fuse and tail...might still be rebuildable.

Mine always performed well with an OS .15R/C. I will have to get one of these kits

I saw the pics of the Quaker, and noticed the fuse sheeting was on the outside of the sticks. I'm working on a Power House, and the plan shows the sheeting on the inside of the sticks. Is there a reason for one or the other? It might be easier to handle with the sheeting on the outside, but are there any other reasons?

The stringers are supposed to be on the outside of the sheeting to give it a better look. he has the stringer on the outside... By the old plans though there is much less sheeting.

Got called in to work on the Sunday, and it was a beautiful day too. Took the day off today, but it's raining, so still no maiden flight. Some time soon I'll work out how to finish this working stuff.

Like Evan says I put the stringers on the outside of the sheeting, and they give the fuse some shape rather than the usual slab-sides. They probably add to the lateral strength of the fuse as well. Also, like Evan says, there is quite a bit of sheeting, more than I would put in if I was doing it again. I suppose it's to cater for a large range of flying styles and levels of skill, but it does make the model a bit heavier.

The old plans had very little sheeting. This is an enlarged Quaker Flash built to the plans except for the plug in wings and removable stabs.

Woohoo! Maiden flight flown. Finally!

Flew dead straight except 3 clicks of left on the glide. KMills 1.3 exactly the right power to get up to 300 ft or so and stooge around
