I bought a 54" Quaker kit from Penn Valley Hobbies. Very nice kit, good wood generally, and very well cut.

Pics of the build so far

The kit comes with balsa cut wing tip components. Another Oz modeller sent me some reed to try so used that for the wing-tips instead (Thanks Stewart!)

Empennage & fuse. I have added diagonal braces on top and bottom of fuse, plus the odd gusset or two. They probably aren't necessary but I prefer it.

Looking good John, Quakers seem to be great flyers at any scale, my 45" Quaker has no nasty habits and thermals well.

John: Looks good. What do you plan to use for power? And, Dyewart, what do you have in your 45" Quaker?

The 54" flies great on a 2 stroke .15 or 4 stroke .20. These are not speed models. The 45' is great for a 400 electric or a .10 or .15.

I have Quakers from 36" to 200" and they all fly the same, great. My present Quakers...

Jim,
I currently have a PAW100 R/C diesel in the 45" Quaker, no screaming climb , but a nice flyer.
Oh notice the name is Stewart- should wear my glasses when I type

John-

I built Penn Valley's Quaker 54 a couple years ago and fly it regularly. Lots of fun! My tired old OS FSR .10 on 15% nitro/20% oil and 8x3 MA prop is plenty of power for 45 to 60 degree climb at full throttle - but most flying is at 1/3 to 1/2. Takes off in about 10 ft, can loop after about 20, does nice snaps and will fly inverted (barely). Maybe not in character, but it sure gets attention! Takes about 20ft to get off the water on floats, and still very sprightly flying, but inverted is tougher.

My kit came with very light but punky stripwood and I had to replace most of it. Mine weighs 26oz (737g) with Berg 5 rcvr, 3 HS-81 servos, 300mah nicads, and Ultracote covering.

A friend scratchbuilt one from my plan and powered it electrically, with a HiMax HC2812-0850 brushless outrunner motor and 3S2200 LiPo. Weighs about same as mine. Not quite as peppy, but it's not propped to load the motor much.

I sure like your reed wing tips! I was in a hurry and just used the kit sheet parts.

Enjoy!

-Dave
(oops - edited to correct prop size from 7x3 to 8x3)

I plan on using a KMills 1.3 with a 9*4 prop. If that's not enough then a Thunder Tiger .15 on an 8*4 should be more than enough. There's also a 10FSR which is begging to get flown.

Thanks for all the positive comments guys. I have a few days off work now (while Mrs VB is still at work) so progress should be good.

DaveP, I found the same problem with some of the strip wood, but the rest was very good.

John.
Are you going to add shere webs to the wingspars ? I would add them to both front and rear spars out to 1/3 span at least.

I've been tossing up about shear webs, and I think I will add them.

A bit more progress...

Empennage gluing together. I'll add a little in-fill at the centre to increase gluing area to the fuse and to make covering a bit simpler

Fuselage almost ready to cover, KMills in pride of place. I'll use some combination of see through Profilm (Oracover) and solid colours. Trexler #8s are going on this one

Wing is ready to cover.

Looking good, John!

The only weakness I've found with mine is the joint at the base of the vertical stabilizer. Twice my fin has broken off when the plane has been blown upside-down on the ground by wind. I really enjoy hovering in the wind and landing vertically - this requires a bit of wind and anything over about 10mph makes groundhandling difficult.

The fix is to extend the front LE of the verticle stab down through the horizontal and into the fuse. Ont the rear I make a doubler that goes forward of the stab TE into the fuse...

Agreed on the weakness in the fin/tailplane attachment. My current plan is a skewer up from the fuse into the 1st or 2nd rib of the fin, just as soon as I can find a 6" 3/32 drill bit. I think they have them at the local hardware supermart. Failing that a sharpened bit of brass tube should do it.

I glued the fin & tailplane to the fuse last night so I've lost the opportunity to extend the LE & TE at this point.

I have also added (pretty!) curved gussets at the bottom corners of the fin which help to keep its shape.
