This is the result of a full throttle dive and then a full climb. Trying to impress the wife and over-g the plane. Just as it started to climb the right wing snapped off and then the plane went into a death roll and Lawn darted to the ground. So far the reciever still works, and the engine fired back up. What are some tell tale signs of a damaged engine besides the obvious things?

Did it Lawn Dart into the dirt...or pavement?? If you just dug a post hole with it, make sure you get all the dirt out...it should be fine.

Looks like now would be a perfect time to get something bigger.....say a 30%'er.....you could really impress her with that!!

Good luck.........

A few months a friend gave me a 4* that he had crashed and looked like the same damage that you have. I pieced the broken balsa together and used it for a pattern to rebuild. He did not have all of the pieces but there was enough that I could lay out new wood. Yours looks like one side of the fuselage is somewhat intact. Believe it or not it is rebuildable. 4* are simple builds and great flyers. Here is a picture of mine after the rebuild. A few bucks is all I have in the airframe so I take it out as my "fly it like you stole it" model.

Brewski.

I was being an arse and my 4* .40 took a bit of a dirt bath. The fuse came out mostly ok. My question to you and anyone else who will chime in is what to do about that wing. I'm not sure the best way to re-attach the broken off section. It parted company at the second rib. Does one splice all connection spars together, etc. Attached is pic of situation. the thick piece on the rear spar was for a wing mounte servo and that whole assy stayed in tact. I would like to fly the plane aggressively again so any help on methods for splicing spars or creating doublers, or how to go about it is appreciated. It was a kit so I can rebuild it.

My wing was busted up something like yours. The toughest part for me was carefully removing the broken formers. I would remove the sheeting on the right of the photo also. Then lightly re-glue the spars back, add doublers on all including the wide center spar. Fit the new formers for doublers. After you get the fit right put the glue to it. Some would use CA but I like to also use some epoxy. A little weight penalty maybe but nothing to worry about for the 4*. Then re-sheet past the break.

Thanks... I do need to continue to pull back the covers to see if anything else is loose or cracked. So after sheeting removed, I can run doubles down each side of the various spars. I was thinking i coiuld recess the ribs a bit more and go with 3/16 up from the 1/8" sheeting currently in use, extending like you said is a good idea too. Thks.

dosen't the four 4* comes with fiber glass wing joint ?

You can repair if you take you time.

This how I would do it.

cut into the rib/shear wed ..... add doublers on both the top and bottom spare. (from the inside)
Use spurt. I would epoxy it.

remake the rib and shear web accordingly.

You might as will makesure the doublers run 2 wing bay long...just to makesure

it'll be heaveier..so you need to add more wight on the other side

Not the ARF... that is one of the issues I have with ARF's. Where the wing halves meet is a high stress area and needs more than a spar joiner and a butt joint epoxied together. If this had been a kit build, with the glass tape over the center section, this crash would not have happened. By looking at the pics the section of the wing joint just in front of the spar did not have enough glue when it was assembled (break looks too clean). The wing joint failed at the front and tore toward the back of the left wing panel in the high "G" pull. This one can be re built.... Just strip the covering and start making fuse templates from the side that is left and it will come back to fly another day.

Also notice how the firewall and formers broke mostly at the glue joints - that is not supposed to happen if you have a good joint. Almost looks like they didn't glue them in place at all, just dry fit and then put a fillet around the edge.

I don't know if I would trust that receiver 100%. Looks like a pretty hard hit. You might want to send it in to be checked or replace it.

What a shame Beach...I know you just got her up and going..................Full throttle dives and G forces and all the flight science calculations etc etc still don't explain the REAL reason this kind of %&&$#% happens.....................tryin' to impress the chix..........she thought it was cool alright.........yer plane is still busted tho....good luck and enjoy the rebuild.I had to repair a (one) busted wing rib on my 4* recently..........it aint too bad. It's all part of it I guess......good luck.

just because it was an arf is no excuse not to glass the center section. Also the instruction manuals usually say to go back over the glue joints BEFORE flying the model.

ya it sucks that the plane is a rebuildable pile of crap right now, but now it just gives me more reason and motivation to move onto another plane that Ive been hearing all good things about. The Pacific Knockabout.

There wasn't any physical damage to it, and all channels still work when I tested them. Im going to do the normal powered down distance check in my new model, and if everything see
