A MODE C Transponder transmits to the tower among other info, the ALTITUDE of the plane. If the altimeter does NOT have a data port in the back (is not ENCODING) and all it has is the static tube fitting, how does the Transponder gets the altitude of the plane?. At my home base is a Cessna 172 that was banged pretty bad and it was dissasembled for parts. The Altimeter did not have any data port on the back, but still the plane was fitted with a MODE C Transponder...I am lost now.

Somewhere under the panel there is mounted a box called a blind encoder. It takes static pressure and turns it into a signal that is put out through the transponder as an altitude reading. Look for a connector from the back of the transponder mounting tray to a box that is connected to static pressure and that will be the encoder.

Got it, thanks. One more question,...then what is the data port on the back of the Altimeter (encoding) for?...auto pilot?

The data port on an encoding altimeter connects to the transponder.
