Any battery can catch on fire under the right circumstances, usually over charging. I've even seen car batteries explode. Years ago, when the first rechargeable alkalines came out, they had the same problem and reputation. It was partly over charging, and partly because people were recharging non-rechargeable batteries in the chargers. There are a couple things that make LiPo's more of a hazard. First, they use a 2 stage CC/CV charging technique (Constant Current/Constant Voltage) that isn't used with NiMH or NiCad chargers. When they first came out (and even now), people used their NiMH chargers on them. This charged them too fast and too much. The LiPo cells would swell, whistle, and then burn (or explode). The 2nd problem is that the polymers are more volatile, and they burn much hotter. Hot enough to ignite many things around them. If you short (cross the leads on) any battery, it can kill the battery, but doing it to a LiPo can cause it to burn. Even puncturing the cells can cause this. It may be partly due to the fast discharge rates and the amount of energy they can store, as well as the polymers, but I'm not 100% certain. So, they can be dangerous, but, keep in mind that most of the videos you see of exploding LiPo batteries are staged. They intentionally overcharge the battery with the wrong type of charger to make sure it'll burn for the camera. If you treat them with respect, you shouldn't have any problems. Most of us have heard stories of exploding LiPo's, but never actually seen it ourselves.
