Ali -> Electra ARF first flights (3/31/2008 10:45:48 PM)

The weather in the uk did the unusual thing of going against a negative forecast in us flyers favour yesterday. This allowed me a near perfect afternoon to test my new Electra ARF. I picked up the model at Florida jets after Dustin at BVM let me have stir of the sticks. I loved it back then, but now its home, set up how I like it, and more importantly mine! I can really get to know it.
I managed three flights yesterday afternoon. I have to say that before this model I was not really sold on the whole EDF thing that much. Yeah I flew them and to a degree enjoyed them, but the Electra is the first plane that has really pushed all my buttons on the performance front. Its also really good looking to boot.
I look forward to lots more flying with my new deluxe dust buster. I will try and post some pics, but stay with me as a technophobe operating a totally new lap top running on a different system than what he's used to could prove interesting.
Regards Al

First take off was shorter than I expected and the climb out angle was impressive.

Ali -> RE: Electra ARF first flights (3/31/2008 10:55:12 PM)

All cleaned up and motoring downwind. Even I was surprised how clean and accurate this model is. Hardly any trim and light on all controls. It's a real flyers plane, you really notice the energy retention. I can go hacking along a fly by shut the throttle and complete the entire turnaround maneuver on the glide.

Good luck with your new Electra Ali.

All trimmed out and starting to enjoy it now. [:D]

Need some adjustment on the gear Ali, that one hanging out is slowing you down :)

Ali -> RE: Electra ARF first flights (3/31/2008 11:02:08 PM)

Last one showing the huge and effective flaps. i found no reason to add any mixing even with all that flap area. i even found myself coming on the power on finals to keep the speed up.
Thanks Joe. How you keeping? Will you be at Top Gun?
Regards Al

f16jc -> RE: Electra ARF first flights (3/31/2008 11:05:03 PM)

I am doing good Ali, thanks. I plan on attending Top Gun if everything and everyone allows me to get away. Good luck at Top Gun.
Joe Castelao!!

Very nice flying yesterday Ali. It was a joy to watch the Electra fly, the speed but also gracefulness of it showed how far some edf's have come.
Look forward to seeing it again and in the shows.

Simon.

ravill -> RE: Electra ARF first flights (3/31/2008 11:14:09 PM)

Mini bandit that is rubber band powered? Or is there a hamster in there somewhere? [:D]

Its no fair to show an expert flying another greatly designed BVM airframe! A regular nobody like me should have it! That's it, Ali send it to me.

Ali, you have all the cool toys and fly them too well. You are a gentleman and a great pilot! [:)] (How does that saying go? [&:] )

Raf

Ali -> RE: Electra ARF first flights (4/1/2008 11:03:58 AM)

Hi Chris.
Well spotted. I will have to have a look at tonight in the shop... would hate to me losing MPH [;)]
Hey Raf! I was a bit like you about Edf.. Not saying they will ever replace my turbine models but a nice alternative. Plus they don't stink and you can put them on their nose without worrying about Kero spilling everywhere[:@] Two of the undersold aspects of edf if you ask me. Oh and I might get shot to bits for this but after just two flights I actually think the Electra is a better flying plane than any bandit I have flown. Better for me anyway. I think its more precise and feels more balanced on the sticks.
BTW. I liked your Bandit/ Flash video last week. Very nice. Looks like you have been spending some serious stick time down the field!
Hey Joe. I look forward to seeing you at Top Gun. I hope you make it.
Regards Al

12S 6,400 Ali?

R_Belluomini -> RE: Electra ARF first flights (4/1/2008 12:18:08 PM)

So Ali what did you do with the green and white beast?

Chris 12S?

bigandy -> RE: Electra ARF first flights (4/1/2008 12:32:04 PM)

Hi Ali,

Do you have any information on the power setup you used (cells, motor, fan etc)?

Cheers
Andy

Ron Stahl -> RE: Electra ARF first flights (4/1/2008 1:05:52 PM)

Enjoy it Ali, I am ready to cover my kit electra as soon as I return from the Toledo Show this weekend. I built mine while I was home recovering from surgery this past month. I am sure that it took longer than normal to build since I couldn't sit for more than a 1/2 hour in the begining, but I was under 50 hours to frame it out. Doing mine in monocote and paint to save some weight so I can fly it off our short 300 foot runway since we cannot fly turbines there anymore.

Ali -> RE: Electra ARF first flights (4/1/2008 1:08:09 PM)

I have tried two set ups so far
Thunder power 12 S 5000 Extreme and Dualsky 12s 6600
I am using the viofan package with castle controller ( Stock BVM set up ) I would love to get my hands on that 16S set up that bob was flying at FJ. Wow that thing was moving.
The lean green snot machine is upstairs either awaiting a buyer ( Yeah right ) or Sandor to get his Electra ARF and make me a turbine conversion set for it. The builder who stitched my up on it has not come back with a response so I guess I need to make the most of a bad job and fly the a$$ off it!
Regards Al

kwb -> RE: Electra ARF first flights (4/1/2008 10:56:40 PM)

Ali,

Let me know if you manage to get a turbine conversion kit before I build my electra. I would be interested as it would save me some build time converting it to turbine use.

Cheers

Kirk

Ali,
What is your weight with 12s 5000mAh?
My is still in the box. I only had a chance to skim through the building manual.
BTW, building manual is something show you how to asseble the plane. Just in case you don't what building manual is.[:D]

I'm interested to see if there is any weight difference between the Arf and the kit. My kit built Electra weighed 14 pounds with a 12S 5000mAh setup. I used a light weight carbon fiber fan and the old rhom air aluminum air operated main retracts (with Dura struts and BVM wheels and brakes) and the BVM aluminum nose gear instead of the EVF or the servo operated retracts. I would guess the combined weight of the lighter power setup and the air operated retracts is probably a wash when compared to the weight of the EVF and servo operated retracts with no oleo struts, no aluminum wheels and no brakes.

tamjets -> RE: Electra ARF first flights (4/2/2008 5:36:16 PM)

I'm putting air retract system with trailing struts and light wheel/brake. It should not weight any heavy than stock retract.

I hope that Tam also makes a turbine kit to put a P-60 in the electra-ARF.
i would get one.

As mentioned I would also be interested in a conversion kit providing the price is sensible as it would reduce the build time to convert this model to turbine use. I think converting this model may become popular if it becomes an easy task, as it is effectively a "mini bandit" for smaller turbine use.

as Ali mentioned i was getting a Electra to first make a gear for it.
then i would convert it to a Turbine version.
as Ali mentioned to me , the tanks will be major issue.
here is a picture of how the gear will look for the "T' Version
to give you a idea of the size , the wheel is 55mm aprox 2 inch
Trailing oleo,s , and DISK brake with Brake pad so no pattented o-ring design..[;)]
