I'm wondering on the shelf life of Nitro Fuel in PLASTIC bottles. 15% Omega to be specific.

Right now a local HS is selling 15% Omega for $11/gal and I think that's a good deal (or is it not???) and I kinda wanna Stock Up.

I'm wondering how long these can last?

It wouldn't be much of savings if the fuel goes bad.

This is the answer Morgan Fuel, the maker, gives in their FAQ's;

What is the shelf life of the fuel?


Unopened and stored in ideal conditions (between 60-80 degrees) it will remain usable for several (5-7) years. As the fuel begins to degrade it will increasingly lack the punch of new fuel. Really the only way to tell if the fuel is good is to run it. If it idles well and the transition is good on the ground, use it. You might notice a little less "bark" in a fuel that has been stored for several years but it won't hurt the engine.

Opened would vary according to how much moisture the fuel has sponged out of the air. A quick way to ruin a gallon of fuel is to drain your tank at the end of your flying day back into the fuel jug. What is happening is that your fuel is picking up moisture from the pressurized tank. The carburetor is sucking in humid air and after combustion the moisture laden air is entering into your tank via the tube from your muffler. When you return the fuel from your tank to your fuel jug you are contaminating the rest of the fuel in the jug.

My recommendation is to run your tank dry at the end of the day, but whether you do that or not don't return the fuel from your tank to your fuel jug.

Also do you think it's a decent deal to even stock up on or is $11 the going rate for this fuel?

If it were $11.00 per gallon here I would buy all I could afford and store. That is a very good price here.

Most fuel makers use a plastic jug which is cheaper than the metal container. Morgans uses plastic and PowerMaster uses a tin can. The Major difference is that UV ( sunlight ) can not penetrate a metal can and degrade the Nitromethane that is part of the fuel, as it can a plastic Jug.

Having said the above, I use a plastic jug ( 3 litre pop bottle ) on my field kit. I was considering making a sock out of denim to cover the bottle so that light does not get it and ruin the fuel, yet I have never done this as my fuel does not last that long once part of my field kit.

Morgans is shipped in a cardboard box which does not let light get in, same as PowerMaster, so if you buy enough like 4 gallons of Morgans, you can keep it in the box and protected from light until you use it.

I have had fuel in a clear plastic container for five years, taken no special precautions against light, and the fuel was still good, however I do not know exactly how much Nitro degraded, I was just happy that it burned.

I pay almost twice that in Houston for 15% Omega. The answers for useful life are spot on. Keep it cool and out of sunlight and it will last a very long time. (I've had it last longer than 7 yrs and still be OK as long as it's cool and in the dark)

Hey YUKON, I'm with you on the "once it's in my flight box it don't last long". If I can get three weeks on a gallon I haven't been flying up to standard.

Kept in a cool dry place, fuel will last almost indefinitely. I have fuel that is in plastic jugs that I bought in 1995 that is still working fine. Clarence Lee also says this in his books on the R/C engine
