Hey FlyinTexan... Ncie work there...

Hmmm.. well I'm not familiar at all with Solid Edge... And I don't know how common it is used...

I suppose you can submit it in whatever format is the samllest/most "importable" to Solid Edge...

Any chance it exports DXF or DWG files? If it did, maybe you could send it in native and Autocad format so as to broaden the usefulness?

Thanks for the comments... i'm just getting into designing planes in CAD and thought this was a neat way to make friends and share files. We did up our Hangar 37 site for this same reason so why not?

Take care...

I love the cad vault. Just sorry I didn't see it sooner. I will gladly submit some of my files, but my native format is Solid Edge. Should I submit 3D stuff in parasolid (.x_t) and/or step format? [/QUOTE]

Ditto on what Modib wrote, on all accounts I too am just starting to get into CAD airplane designing (actually RC in general) and I'm meeting great folks and learning TONS about nomeclature/manufacturers/model numbers of parts.

This is a really fun project for me! And as always, I'm still open for donations

No problem. I will gladly submit dxf and autocad files.

My favorite part about designing in 3D is that you can design a whole wing (panel) parametrically. I can change the airfoil, chord or span, etc. on parent model of the wing panel and all the parts will update, including my 2D plans! I love technology.

I don't know about other software, but in Solid Edge I can specify mass density to individual parts and get a CG location and total mass on the assembly model.

I know what you mean... I am an AVID Lighwave 3D user... used to do alot of 3D animation for video... and tho I could design a plane in Lightwave no problem... getting it into a CAD program isn't gonna happen. The covnersion process triples all polygons, and I don't know AutoCAD well enough yet to determine if this can be rectified.

And AutoCAD's method of designing is SO foreign to me.... learning curve is gonna be fairly steep here...

I've redesigned my site a bit:

....it gives the idea of the prototype I've been thinking about

I submitted a couple of parts to the two web pages, I also posted on the beta site. so this is duplicate, I guess.

Welp, I got the new server sooner than expected (wohoo!) and I've just upgraded it to Obsd 3.3. I'm gonna install apache, mysql and php on it over the next few daze. Until then...I've gotten some new submissions! We're up to around 80 individual drawings right now! The sorting/refinement will progress asap (to read: as soon as I get my lazy butt around to it), but I'm gonna be out of town next week for lil' brother's wedding, ...but after that I can put some serious crunching into the website.

Lookin' really good, if you want some help with website graphics or layout I'll give you a hand. Looks like everything is in working order and east to use. I would like to suggest a quick slection combo box or links at the top so that you can quickly jump to the type of equipment you want to use.

How hard would it be to make the drawings into thumbnail pictures on the web site? when you click the thumbnail you can see a bigger picture, then have the option to download.

just my 2 cents

While it certainly would be neat to have thumbnails, it would be alot of work on my end... load file, capture screen, resize, save for web, re-design site for thumbnail use, link files, etc...

MOST of the files I broke up into smaller "packs" and are less than 100k... often less than 50k... so I can't really justify the extra work & maintenance...

Perhaps the other site would be interested in doing that? He seems to have a really nice grasp of programming...

What other site?

Can you do dynamic pages at your site, asp, or xhml or something?

there are two locations:

Aloof has: http://rccadparts.deathkeep.com/

and I have http://www.renderwurx.com/rc/dxf

We have the capacity to do just about anything we want, but I'm not interested in taking it any further than maintaining catergory zip files.

I think maybe Aloof would be more apt to integrate the thumbnail ideas as he's stripping each file out seperately. A great idea, but again, more work than I deem feasible on our end.

We do web development (and a whole lot more) for a living...

http://www.renderwurx.com

But we focus on marketing sites and design... flash, etc...

Sure I can do thumbnails, good idea! I have some perl code that will resize images on the fly. But I don't know how well they're going to look....we'll see

The site that I have up right now is only a temporary one because it's on Osiris, which is a multi-user production server, so I don't want to run php on it because of some security holes in it.

The new server, Atropos, is going to have dynamic pages using php/mysql and some perl. Right now I'm tightening down the security on Atropos and will be installing apache on it, hopefully tonight. I'm also planning all kinds of cool little "trinkets" for that site. ETA on Atropos going live is around the end of September (I'll be gone for 2 weeks).

In the mean time,...keep them files and ideas of what you'd like to see on the site coming! Thanks for all your guys's contributions!
