How does wing sweep affect an aerobatic airplane? I know that a straigh leading edge such as that on the Edge 540 helps the low speed stall characteristics but what about its ability to do precision aerobatics? Wing sweep is also supposed to decrease drag, but look who is winning the full scale Red Bull Air Races..Edge 540s are the airplanes of choice and they have the straight leading edge wing.

wing sweep has no effect on drag until you get to high mach numbers.

I would say that generally, you don't want any sweep on an aerobatic plane. At high angles of attack, there will be yaw/roll coupling.....positive at positive angles of attack, negative at negative angles of attack.

Sweep does decrease the overall lift slope of the wing ( less lift per degree angle of attack ), so it gives you higher angle of attack capability, but it also moves the stall outboard, unless the airfoils are designed accordingly.

I'm more than sure that others here are more qualified to comment, but here are a few thoughts on wing sweep.

It all depends upon what the designer had in mind for the function of the aircraft. Quick escape? Maybe not!

With a swept wing aircraft every few degrees of wing angle constitutes a degree of effective dihedral. So depending upon how the wing is mounted to the fuselage is an important design factor. A high mounted swept wing with anhedral gives more upright maneuverability like roll and at the same time increases inverted stability, when in inverted flight would constitute dihedral.

Also with a swept wing design the outboard wing becomes effectively longer in a turn which diminishes adverse yaw, and the need to the use of rudder for a coordinated turn.

There are a lot of factors.

Also, be sure to measure sweep correctly. The Edge 540 techncially has a forward swept wing. A straight leading edge and a taper on the TE means that the 25% point of the wing is actually sweeping forward slightly.

theory
In actual practice - LE sweep can and does work extremely well on aerobatic craft -full scale and models
th notable example is the Czech ZLIN series 526.
I did a numbeof 526 permutations for contest work - - very successful in pattern and IMAC
the current trend of straight LE planes also very good - but the real change in the model and full scale?
power to weight and wing loadings .
Even the Bucker biplanes had sweep -again a very successful approach full scale and models
