Hy! I have found a quarter miget plan of 1970's . I started building the model, but I still have to find the proper engine to power it. Could anyone tell me what could be the best engine of the following : Uctkam .15FR pylon, MVVS .15 rear exhaust, OPS .15 side exhaust... maybe you could suggest me other engines? anyone has a new .15 speed or C/L combat engine to sell?

I guess you just want to build and fly a vintage Quarter Midget. There are no races so you don't have to beat anyone.

I'd go with the OPS.

when these were being raced several years ago, the Nelson rear exhaust .15 became the engine of choice. With no particular rules to follow, you could use a larger venturi (the quarter midget class was limited to .240 inches max ID) and even a full tuned pipe.

In Australia, they currently fly airplanes with the same size restrictions, and use .21 cu in engines with full tuned pipes, and they're quite a bit faster than the old AMA quarter midget planes. I've heard they use the Novarossi .21 with a full length pipe.

I think it would be fun to fly one built to the Australian rules!

"Yeah But!"

He wants to build an old QM ship from plans. Since there is no longer a QM class he doesn't have to worry about having the latest and greatest. He can use any engine ever made that is a .15 and will fit in the nose. He won't be competing with anyone so engine choice is not that critical.

I'd look at the plans and determine what period it was designed for and go with an engine from that era.

I don't know what the current Australian rules are for their .21 class but his ship may or may not fit the requirements.

What model are the plans for?

If it's an old "Bonzo" or something like that with non-tapered wings you could use an old OS Max-III or Fox.

Something more modern might call for a Cox Conquest, Rossi or Nelson. Before that would be a ST G.15, K&B .15S or maybe a Taipan .15 Goldhead.

What kind of engine is shown on the plans, side or rear exhaust?

I think for just practical user friendly flying I would just throw a .25 FX with a jett muffler on it. A .15 may capture the nostalgia but a modern small sport engine would be more fun overall I believe.

Why stop there? Lots of great engines in .25 size cases like the OS .32 which turns great on a light prop or TT.36 or Irvine .39 all of which are very light engines.

Many years ago, the Mexicans were racing QM airframes with pylon racing .40's at the high altitudes of Mexico City.

When I get to finishing mine up, it will have a Jett .35 in the nose.
