should I buy a TX (hitec/futaba/JR) or use the 'usb only' TX that comes with the simulators?

newbie question...

I'm getting my first plane sometime in the next two month (budget permitting - and selling stuff successfully on ebay!) but i've got the cash for an RC simulator now. the question is - should I buy a 4ch or 6ch tx - which I would then use with the plane that I buy, or should I stick with the USB only TX that comes with most of the simulators? there are a few TX for sale (JR Sport S400, Hitec Flash 5/futaba Attack-4) that are of interest, but i'm seeking the guidance of the experienced (or whomever happens to be online and replies) before committing the cash...

Thanks!
Rob

A 6 channel might be best as you progrees in your learning and moving up from a trainer ,to a Stick, then to a intermediate type plane. The extra two channels will help when using dual elevators or a plane with retracts later on. That way you will have the Transmitter to fit the style of plane you move up to, and you wont have to buy another Tx later on, and then you are stuck with a 4 channal that might not ever get used.

As far as radio equipments...You yourself a favor ...get a new system. A computerized with six channels.
It'll save you more money in the long run.

One of the best investment i made was to get a good TX.

I started off with only a 4 channel ,but 3 months later I bought a computerized TX anyways..
So i actually spent more money.lol

You don't really know what you're going to get buying used stuff on E-bay and you're not going to have
that warrenty. One hick up and a crash model...you're not going to save any money and you'll be stuck
with a product that you can't send in for warrenty.

Bascailly this is what I do when I add new models to my fleet. I purchase those complete radio
system with only the 4 channels TX. Instead of buy just the flight pack
I have extra TX up the waazzooo.
$10 more dollars gets me extra battary pack and charger

Hey, thanks to both of you.

I was wondering about the 4ch/6ch difference, because I don't see myself staying with just 4ch planes for very long. I know myself too well in that dept.

FLYX - if I follow you correctly, you always by kits with the full tx/rx/servo/battery setup, but you still only fly with your 'main' tx?

The simulators that come with "usb only TX's" actually come with simulated transmitters. They actually aren't TXs because they don't generate radio signals. So buying a simulator that has a "usb only" box isn't going to get you a usable radio TX for your model.

As for buying a radio, it will be very worthwhile to buy a complete set that includes a TX that is capable of doing things entry level TXs can't do. Expo and dual rates are often available in starter radios, but make sure they are in the one you get. Look for mixes and model memory. Truth is...... this could go on and on....... look around the radio forum or ask about entry level versus the next step up radios over on the beginner's forum. The topic is huge.

What simulators have you been looking at?

Yeap, you might as well. it dosn't hurt to have extra chargers..this way you can charge
a lot of battery packs over nite.

Plus if you have enough of them. You can use the batteries from the tx and make
RX battery packs out of them.

A 6 channel will also allow to fly heli. You just remove a little brass piece from the throttle
You know how you can feel that click when you move the throttle up and down ?
You need the extra channel for the gyro.
In case later on, you decide to go in that direction.

Plus the first 4 channel radio i got ...didn't have dual rates. That was screwie.
My 4* can fly hot or mild with dual rates. it lands like a kitten on low rates.lol

Lots of good computer radios out there that come with a complete set and do mixes and such.

This one at $210 is often overlooked. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGZW3**&P=7 TX, RX, batteries, chargers, servos, switch, hardware and all $210. It's a good radio too.

And later on, when you add a 2nd model to the hangar, the flight packs for Park Flyers are around $80 for a set of servos and a RX and battery. And for a 40 or 60 size model, flight packs are $86-$90.

But look at the JR XP7202, and the Futaba....... Heck, just go to Tower online and look at Futaba and Hitec setups by price (you know that better than we do), and HorizonHobby online and look at the JR stuff. But keep in mind that the Hitec flight packs are available for JR, Hitec, Futaba, etc and are a heck of a deal. Good brands all.

I was looking at the SIM comparison chart and I know i'll start off with FMS and upgrade as money allows - hence the search for a used TX... gotta re-think a few things and basically start all over with the 'what to buy' setup. I'm not 'used equipment' adverse, but starting off at 2.4gHz (re: new) sure does sound a whole bunch sweeter. Of course, my whole budget just started that crawl upwards...

Da rock - I knew the TX that come with the SIMs aren't actual TXs, but i was reading the forums and picked up on the thread that suggested it's better to fly SIM with your own TX than to switch between units, since the feel of each TX is different... Thanks! I'll check out the 'TX upgrades' threads and see where my buy in should be...

Buy yourself a cheap ($25) 4 channel TX to use for the sim only, or buy the sim that comes with a usb "transmitter".

I hate having to drag my computer radio into the house and using up the battery up while I'm dinkng around on the sim.

BTW: If you're on a budget AeroFly Pro (not Deluxe) is a great sim. Not the greatest graphics, but the physics are very good.

That looks like a good one to start off with. It's has everything you need for a while, while.
You can't beat the ball bearings servos that'll come with it.

2.4 ghz are nice i guess, It has came a long ways.

when i first started there were still AM TX floating around.lol
I bought a complete set up Super Sporter, .46 OS and an AM for $100
I didn't have any problems with it.
That's why you join a club there's always deals
i got an enya 1.20 FS for $20.lol It runs perfect. Not as powerful as the newer OS with pumps, but it's still a 1.20 FS for $20
