I have a question for anybody that has one of the 28% Wild Hare planes... did you have to cut through the plywood ring that mounts the cowl in order to mount the cowl? I *really* hate to cut that ring but don't see any other way really to do it. I'm using a DL-50 and trying to decide between the stock muffler, or a JTec Pitts style that I bought. The stock muffler looks like I would have to cut less, only one tube instead of two, but will definitely have to cut the wood ring to mount the cowl. The stock muffler I might be able to just cut the interior part out and leave the ring, not sure yet.

Anybody got any pictures of how/what they did with a DA-50 or DL-50?

Too late tonight to get a picture of the cowl. I'll try and get one posted here tomorrow for you. And I did NOT cut the plywwod ring.

This is a 28% WH Edge 540 with DA50 and stock muffler. To get the cowl on as cut in the picture, tilt the front of the cowl down and rotate CW about 45 degrees and then slide the cowl over the down tube of muffler. This should put the widest part of the plywood ring opening at the prop shaft. It takes a bit of turning and tilting, but you'll get the procedure figured out.

It's perfectly acceptable to cut the exhaust stack down a bit for an easier cowl installation. There will be no change in sound level or performance. Making that stack shorter also saves the stack from getting broken off a muffler in a hard nose over. If you cut the stack to where it's only an inch or less longer than the outside of the cowl things get real easy.

The picture helped a bunch, I was trying not to cut the semi-circle area out right near the trim ring too, but I suppose that would be the easiest thing to do. Better cooling that way too. Thanks for posting it.
