Thought some of the group might get a kick out of the link below. This is a 75% scale Corsair replica that is being built as part of a monument to Ira Kepford. If the construction of the fuse and tail looks familiar, well it should!

Thanks Chad!  I was wonder when you were going to tell the group...

The fuse design is yours with the main wing being based on the Goodyear prints (which are actually Vaught) and I replaced the NACA airfoils with the GA equivalents.   All of the tail pieces where re-designed several times in order to compensate for the weight and shrinkage issues with Expoxy.  I'm currently the Vice President of the Replica Fighters Association (RFA) and another member who owns a set of the Vought drawings made recommendations that would use more of the actual structure, so the HStab will go under redesign one more time as will the Rudder.   The tail fin is fine, so I'm not touching it.

By this time next year, it is my goal to be finished and be starting on making the molds.

I have 3 tentative orders and 2 more parties are asking lots of questions.

I don't know how much I have into this project, my gestimates have me well over $50,000 usd so far.

The first flyable version is still another 8 years out unless an investor comes in to make it happen sooner.

For those of you who are VF-17 fans, the plans for the movie are back on ice.   I can't go into details due to legal issues.   Also, one of Ike's wing men and a personal friend of mine, Mel Kurlander (Kurley) died last year.   I wasn't able to make it to the funeral in Chicago.   This means that Country Landreth the only surviving original member.

I've decided that the first static model will be in Ike's last Corsair number & colors (the famous 29) as planned, and the first flyable will change from Tom's #1 Corsair (Big Hog) to Mel Kurlander's number  & colors.

Thanks Gang!

Brilliant project...
If you need any help or Vought blueprints, Scott and I have a lot of them.

Hmm, racing a 75% Corsair against the Thunder Mustangs in the Sport Class in Reno might be fun...
Maybe I should have a talk with my wife about it....

Next Variant will be a racer.

FG-1A (F4U-1A with a Bubble Canopy), M14 with all the trimmings.   Completely Carbon fiber with a mix on new technology that I'm not willing to share at this point.   I have a retired NASA (Apollo)engineer who will be handling the structual analysis.  He also worked on the Concord.

I was one of the original members on a previous attempt to make a scaled composite Corsair targeted for racing.  The torque alone would have ripped the bird appart on take-off.   The structual engineer on the project was not credible and as I found out, he finds himself in court for bad work.  The leader had his own ideas on hoiw things should work and I think the team desolved.   Still friends though...

As with anything, money talks so this project remains on the shelf until the funding shows itself or I build it up from sales of the static display models that have been recently ordered  (F4U, P47 and Bearcat).

Oh!   Forgot to mention!

A friend of mine from Supermarine and I talked to a lady from Reno Racing about a Replica Class and she said ABSOLUTELY YES!   ...but not as long as there are only Thunder Mustangs.  There needs to be at least one other model out there.   Supermarine move its HQ to Texas last year and is working on a Spitfire replica to race and may have one ready this year.   I'll see the owner (Mike) at Airventure and ask him what's going on.

The boys down in Cisco have a bad ass sounding aircraft with the V8. Last year they stopped by Nelson's place and showed it off on the way to Oskosh. It fits on a car trailer. with the wings pulled. I know Scott would love to have one of these Ill keep playing with my 1:1 scale Corsair for now though.

Actually, I'm going to take you up on that!

I have the assembly drawings for the main and tail gear.   Goodyear scanned them inusing high def for us, but the paper quality was not so good.  Often the Vought equivalent is sometimes slightly better.   My gut feeling is that the individual part drawings (NOT the Assembly Drawings), which I've never seen, are clearer.   I know one guy that has them, he keeps offering them to me but he then has no time and he has the sub assembly key which he knows how to read.

So what I'm looking for is either to find the actual gear in a solid model or I need the individual prints in order to model both assemblies.

Any help is appreciated!

Hi,

A friend of mine constructed a 3D model of the retracts in 1:1 scale.
I'll ask him if he would let you have a copy.

I'll also look through my collection of blueprints and can send you those of the retracts.

Just PM me your email.

Danny

Thanks Jerry!   I have those assembly drawings.  I checked out the resolution and the first two are lower than mine but the third one appears to be better than what I have, so it may be useful.

Thanks again!

RANDOM UPDATE - 75% Scale

Because I changed the airfoil from the one you guys were using to a General Aviation Airfoil by Harry Riblet, I was expecting issues when mating the fuse to the wing.   As you can see, I have very little modifications to make.

The next step will be to make the Fuse-Cradle mate perfectly.  Then finish the bottom of the fuse and the bottom of the center-section.

Hi guys! I have just found this thread and read through the first 5 or so pages tonight - gona take a while to read the whole thing!

Figured I might as well share my Corsair pictures with you, especially as DaddySam is modeling the actual plane they are off.

http://s214.photobucket.com/albums/cc58/toasttsaot/Corsair/F4U%20Details%20Ohakea%202012/

I am also building a 1/6 scale Corsair, however it started life as an ESM ARF so doesnt really qualify for this thread. The only bit I really scratch built was the cockpit, so here are some pics.

Any of you are welcome to use any of the pics on my photobucket acct.

Cheers
Brett

Unfortunately, we lost a great pilot and aircraft restorer and a very rare Super Corsair today. Bob Odegaard was killed while practicing for the upcoming Valley City airshow in North Dakota.

It's a great shame that this thread seems to have petered out, for a while it read like a novel that I just couldn't put down.  I stand in awe of the skills displayed by the contributors and will try to emulate some of them when I eventually attempt a Corsair build.  Thanks for giving us mere mortals a glimpse into the world of true scale enthusiasts.

My project is on a back burner right now. I'm waiting for the set of microfilm I ordered from the National Air and Space Museum. I placed the order in September, but have not yet heard word. I still intend on seeing the project through to completion.

My Corsair is safely stored away until I can get back to it. Still working on the landing gear issue as I would like to have an accurate set of retracts for it but, one way or the other, it will get finished.

I'd love to see the Corsairs when they're finished.  Hopefully you'll all post pictures/videos.

Did Danny ever post a video of that beautiful engine he bought?

Jim
