Danny, I agree with Tom's statement above. The ~.014 difference between the 1/4" and 6mm may make for a bit of a sloppy fit but should not be anything that can't be overcome with careful building. The only 1/4" in the tail that would be affected is the "S1" center piece of the stab which has to tab and slot with the other components. Won't make a bit of difference on things like the leading edge and whatnot.

As for the tail hook issues I'm still working on it. There is definitely something wrong in my geometry but I've not figured out how to fix it yet. The stowed position of the tail hook is correct in both the up and down positions. However, as the tailwheel retracts the hook is pushed up and back. You can see in the drawing below where the tailhook ends up with the tailwheel at half retraction. I will continue to work on it over the weekend but I will listen to ideas from anyone who has input and especially anybody who has built on of these with the tail hook.

I've only looked at it a little bit tonight, but I think this behavior may be unavoidable. Given that the attachment point of the tailweel is moving in an arc, I don't see how anything you could do with the lever would keep the hook in the identical spot throughout the retraction cycle. I think CAD should show pretty quickly that it's not physically possible, so you just end-up optimizing for the endpoints.

If I get a chance, I'll make a flat cardboard mockup tonight.

I just proved to my own satisfaction with a compass that it can't be done. The tailboom would have to shrink in length to stay inside the slot during the midddle 1/3 of the retraction cycle.

My opinion is that if you were hand-cutting this kit, you would be extremely fortunate to get as close as the tolerances you list above. I think you will be just fine going with those thicknesses.

My $0.02 only.

Tom

As I'm using a cnc-router to cut the kit, which is accurate to 0.01 mm, I thought it might pose a problem, but you guys are right, 0.35 mm difference is not that much.
So I decided to not modify the drawings.

Thanks for your opinions, Tom and Chad.

Cheers,

Tom,

I have a tail-gear with tail-hook build by Earl Aune at home, I'll check what the tail-hook does during retraction when I get home from Shanghai sunday evening.

Cheers,

Good call, I think. Just get some medium CA.

Tom

For those Corsair geeks who may not have seen it I highly recommend the first 3 1/2 pages of the thread below.

Remklep, it looks like those dimensions are pretty close to ours in America. It is funny that we are one of the last countries to use the old English measures. Kind of embarassing really, but fact. England is metric now for god's sake. I still think in feet and knots, as a pilot, measure is important there..if my ATC gave it in meters and KPH I'd be in trouble!

Danny,

Let me know if yours differs from mine. In these pictures you can see the hardware that is used to raise/lower the hook. Chad's drawings show this too but I wanted to take pictures to see if they would help.

Some cool pictures for sure. I have an acquaintance at the Vought Retirees club and he has sent me a few things that I hold dear. I hope to visit them someday. Thanks for posting!

Vertical Stabilizer (fin) Beta Build Report
Part 1

May 3, 2008 13:52

It almost seems like a waste to post this because the fin was so easy to assemble.

The first picture shows the plan. The label for pieces V5, V6, and V7 are not shown on the plans but the pieces are easily identified.

The second pictures shows the parts laid onto the plans where you can see the labels on the parts.

The next step was to dry fit the pieces. They fit together easily. The only preparation needed prior to gluing was to slightly sand the forward part of V2, V3, and V4 because of the angle of the fit with V8.

V2 needed the aft part sanded slightly because of the angle of the fit with V1.

After another dry fit the pieces were glued and clamped.

The last two pictures show the fin ready for the balsa blocks, leading edge, and sheeting.
