Thought you guys might get a kick out of this video.
A very nice 1/5 Corsair with folding wings and I believe a radial 5 cilinder from Brown Bear Motors in The Nertherlands.

OOPS, forgot the link:
1/5 scale F4U-1D

Cheers,

Guys, I will be going to LA again on business for most of this coming week and wanted to give an update before going.

First off, I'm still working on tail kits and am down to the last three. These include kits for Rusty (Rustypep), Joe (Joeysnaproll), and Rex (Jetfool). Rusty and Joe, thanks for your patience gentleman. You guys were among the first to order but indicated you were in no rush to get started so I have filled the orders of other folks first. Your kits are coming soon! When this all started it was my plan to make kits for those who were a part of Luke's original build group. I figured I'd be making maybe 6 or 8 kits. To date I have sold 18 tail kits! I have shipped 15 of those thus far so I'm hoping to see some serious building going on in the near future.

Returning to the fuselage design. I had some correspondence with Rex and he made the suggestion that we design in a scale hatch for locating switches, charge jacks, filler valves, etc. I think this is a great idea and will be looking for a good place to include it. I would like to have some other input from you guys on what things you would like to see included in the fuselage design. (And the wing for that matter) I'm not going to promise that every idea will get incorporated but certainly we can discuss which ones the majority of us would like to see and include those in the design from the outset. It will help me if I can make up a list of said items and have it in front of me while I'm working on the drawings. So, fire away gents!

There are four little fuse mods that I designed in on my 1/8 that I would like to do again on this build.

  • I put my switches and filler jack in a round hatch on top of the fuse where the fuel fill is on the 1:1. I really like this location since it's scale and super easy to get to. The hatch is held down by a tongue in the front and a rare earth magnet in the back.
  • A place for a microserver to drive the cowl flaps
  • G-10 and brass rails for the sliding canopy
  • Not pictured. Mini bulkhead and hardpoints to attach the tail gear doors.

I'll likely make my cowling top half removable like this, but it doesn't require any mods to the fuse design.

Danny, I tried to hit your FTP server, but have been unsuccessful so far.

Tom

Tom,

I send you a PM regarding the ftp login.

You suggested a micro servo for the cowlflaps.
I already have the electronics that will control the cowl-flaps temperature controlled, but have yet to design the mechanics to make em movable in such a fashion that the mechanics are not or hardly visible.
Do you have a mechanical setup to control them?
I would be very interested in a drawing.

Chad,

A couple of suggestions:

1) I like the idea of hiding fuel and air filler, glowplug and switch under a scalepanel.
I don't know how large the original fuelfiller location is, but if big enough that would be the place to do it like Tom suggested.
2) I would like it very much if the door-retract mechanism in the wings is not visible from within the gear-bays, depending ofcourse on the method used.
Personally I am probably going to use an Ultraprecision valve that ill control the maingear doors also.
3) If you already have a good idea how to do it, movable cowl flaps.
4) Drop mechanism for the center tank/bomb on the F4U-1A
5) Navigation, Position, Strobe, Beacon and landing lights positions on wings and fuse holes for routing the cables through ribs and bulkheads.
6) Attaching the Cowl to the fuse with 4 positioning steel rods and 4 rare-earth magnets.

These are just a couple I can think of now, I will post more as I think of them.

Great work Chad!
Next time I'm in LA I'll send you a message, maybe we can talk in person over a cup of coffee.

Danny

Hey guys, all this input is great. I will install my switches, ect under the fuel panel like Smugator has shown. This is what I was telling chad.
Also I would like to see the open rib structure designed in the wing similar to the brian taylor design. The tips of the ailrons also have a pronouned curve at the tips. A good design of the flaps would be good also,( taylors design involves alot of craving and shaping). Movable cowl flaps would be great too.

Lets see, If you guys would just send 500-700,000 dollars I could buy a full scale and fly it around to all of your areas, for you to see, I wouldn't have to build this model . Isn't this what dreams are for?
Happy 4th of July fellas,

Rex

Here is the "how to" on the scale operational cowl flaps. PJ was working on this for his Top Gun P-47 at the same time I was messing with it on my 1/8. We reached pretty much the identical conclusion. I used throttle cable rather than the inner nyrod, but the result is pretty much the same.

Fuselage Design

Thanks for the suggestions. Please post your comments so Chad will have time to add to the design:

- A scale access panel to hide fuel, air, and electrical connections. Like what Tom has done, use the round hatch on top of the fuselage shown in the attached picture. Tom says the hatch is held down by a tongue in the front and a rare earth magnet in the back.
- Functional Cowl Flaps
- Lighting (allow for wires through ribs and bulkheads)
- Design a way to easily attach/detach the cowl to the fuselage with minimal impact to scale appearance (possibly with 4 positioning rods and rare-earth magnets)
- Functional sliding canopy (using G-10 and brass rails)
- Antenna masts
- Allow for scale exhaust
- Wing lock-down mechanism (something better than bolts, possibly camlocs)
- Cut a hole down one side for a tube for the antenna
- An engine mount that can be adjusted for different engines

Hope you guys dont mind me posting an option for your easly removable cowl mount .Heres is what i did on my Tf kit . i made a frame work that mounts to the firewall that holds both the dummy radail and the cowl its self . the cowl can be removed by removing the prop and 3 screws its strong enough to add weight to the front of the mount say by mixing led shot in epoxy and filling in the cilinders on the radial or mounting batts up there if you go electric you will need weight up front so why not make some thing usable thats my theory pics below

Welcomed post, thanks!
In the last picture, there appears to be hatches. Please explain.
