I haven't actuated the canopy before, so I had rather planned to create a prototype to mess around with as soon as Chad gets the formers drawn.

Tom, I will supply you with a set of "crutch up" formers for the cockpit area so you can play around with it if you like. I guess we need to get a canopy underway as well.

That's great, Chad. Thanks. If we even have a rough canopy, we can get the mechanism(s) working in advance.

Chad,
Yeah, you are right, the additional stringers and the sheeting will be strong enough to take the stress from the removed piece of stringer.
I was just a bit confused as I thought the round re-fueling cap would cut through the stringer anyway, so why design the stringer in at all, but offcourse it is used to attach the sheeting to and the cap is added much later.

Tom,
I got the idea fir the sliding mechanism from a Dutch model airplane forum:

sliding canopy discussion.

They posted some pics, I will re-post them here, maybe you'll get the "picture" :-)
I also included a link to a video of a modified servo for operating a sliding canopy, the howto is on the dutch forum to:

modified servo for sliding canopy

The pulley idea is pretty interesting. I haven't seen it done that way before. I like that the canopy is being pulled in each direction. That will eliminate some potential for binding. I think you could get a servo made for sail winches on RC sailboats to do the job if you didn't want to modify a standard servo. I've seen a tutorial online on how to do that mod as well. It was on one of the forums where we got some ideas for our nav lighting system.

Yep,
In the forum I posted they also talk about using a winch-servo.
I think it's a very elegant and dependable solution, I am going to experiment with it.
It's also nice that I can control the speed of the canopy from my transmitter.

Cheers,

The rigging for that pully system looks complicated.

The rigging with the many pulleys is just to show the concept, all you need is a 2 large pulleys on the servo (One for each side of the canopy rail) and 2 pulleys the lead the actuating wire back to the servo.

Hey all,
I received the following email response regarding price and availability of the Laser 360V. Currently 1.00 British Pound is approximately 2.00 U.S. Dollars so figure to spend around $1280.00 USD plus shipping:

Hi Richard,

The Laser-360v is £640 including post to the USA. Check with your credit card supplier for current exchange rate. The engine is in stock today.

I did not see a price for the 360V twin on your website. What will you be selling it for (USD$) and can you estimate shipping costs to me? Can you tell me when you will have some available?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Richard! The U.S. distributor (for Laser) is still Proctor Enterprises to the best of my knowledge. I think the manufacturer will usually honor their distributor's business relationship as far as ordering. I am highly in favor of this engine choice, amongst many other good choices.

Great ideas on the canopy sirs! I don't know how much of this needs to be incorporated as hard design, but nice to see all the good ideas flowing. I want to build a dummy fuse in the canopy area, with some soft balsa that I can shape toward the old birdcage design. I would put this on the front burner for us birdcage/era afficianados. My idea for the birdcage, all along, has been to make an accurate profile plug; and then utilize one molding for the glazing and a properly cut second molding for the outside framing. I think we are all about detail, and close up.. a molded-in frame is just too corporate kit-like in my opinion. I actually would like to duplicate some of the scale fasteners in the birdcage structure (tiny nuts and bolts, as well rivets). I would just send my model off to whomever is best at making a decent final plug off of it (for vac-forming). Regards to all-Eric

I had a little accident today with the horizontal stab.
I was test fitting the controlhorn to the rudder and horizontal stabilizer today.
As i was doing this I was kinda curious as how strong the horizontal stab was, so I put the center on my knee and applied light pressure, no problems, but when I flipped it over and did the same it creaked lightly and then just split in half...

I know, I know, it didn't have a piece of glass epoxied to the middle yet, so to all, don't forget to apply the glass and epoxy...

Luckily I can make the parts myself on my router

Cheers,

Bummer! Did it pass or fail your stress test?

Bummer Danny! Once installed on the fuselage the stab saddles become the fulcrum point for any stresses and the center section will actually never see this kind of abuse. If it were to break it would have to be outboard of the fuselage and I don't think that will be an issue unless you have elevator flutter or something catastrophic like that.

Just FYI, I will be gone on Vacation through Saturday the 26th so if you send me an email or a PM I won't be able to reply before then. See you in a few days.
