Chad and Richard...

I have recently gone through a search of CNC shops to mill my 1/8 Hub. I learned a lot in the process. One thing I learned is that most CNC shops won't take .dxf or .dwg AutoCAD files. This is the reason why I switch to SolidWorks (which by the way, is I found to be a much better tool the kind of stuff being done for this project). The common file formats CNC shops use are PARASOLID (.x_t), STEP (.step), or IGES (.igs).

If you can send me a good drawing to work from, I can do the cowl for you.

(The attached picture was done in AutoCAD, before I learned to use Solidworks. This cowl was very crudely done for size comarison. It won't be difficult draw one up right.)

Josh

Josh,

UDAMAN! I just love the way people are coming together for this build. The more I read it the more excited I get. I just can't stand myself right now, so I had better go get a beer.

I received the tail kit from Chad today. I opened the box, and was very impressed with what I saw.

As you can see in the pictures, each part is labeled, the plans are impeccable, there were 2 inventory checkoff sheets, and a CD of various highly detailed F4U pictures.

Excellent job! I can't wait to get started.

Glad to see it made it to you in good shape Richard. The missing rudder core shipped out today and should be at your door by Friday I imagine.

I received a phone call from my wife to tell me that UPS had made a delivery. You know what that is! I've got a pretty full next couple of days but I will start prepping material for the first run of kits on Friday or Saturday and I should be cutting parts by early next week.

Damn, you guys are making it very difficult for me to continue my Taylor build and not join in....
Now I read posts of cnc 3d machined cowl plugs and cockpits, knowing me, I'm gonna join in in a couple of days...

How did you come to the conclusion the Royal blown-up plans are more accurate than ie. Brian Taylors 1/6 plans?

I keep an eye on your work on the BT at RCSB. Your talent would certainly be welcome here if you decide to go this route.

I knew I had a Marutaka F4U-1D kit, look what I found.
Is this what you guys are using the plans of?

Cheers

Wow, that's gotta be the best condition Marutaka kit box I've seen!
Yes, the Royal/Marutaka 1/8 scale kit is what this build is based on.

I bought it in 1992.
I wasn't a very good builder back then, had a lot to learn.
I build the fuse, it's ready for planking and the wings are build ribs and spars and lower sheeting...
It was a bit above my ability back then to incorporate flaps, so I put it aside.

The wings have been damaged slightly, the lower sheeting has some cracks.
The aluminium cowl is beautifull, but has no panel lines on it.

Cheers

Ok guys, it's official, I have joined you.
Richard asked "So can I", YES I answered, "officially add you to the builder's list?"...

I am intending to build F4U-1A BuNo 18086, Mayor Gregory "Pappy" Boyington's Lucybell, VMF214 Black Sheep.
I know he never flew BuNo 18086 it was only used for a pr-photo, he did fly BuNo 17740, 17883 and 17915 (he crashed in 915 and was a POW for the rest of the war), but the 18086 is the only one that shows his name and kills.
Although I know that even this not accurate, as with the marines, no pilot had his own plane and they just took whatever was flyable on the flightline, therefore no pilot had his name on his plane.
The marines back then weren't like ie, the 8th airforce in Europe where each pilot had his own bird. (see http://www.acepilots.com/usmc_boyington3.html)
So although he never flew 18086, it's one of the planes most associated with Pappy, it was used to make a pr-photo where pappy was given a victory flag by a mechanic.

I intend to build it as scale as possible, all hidden control surface connections, scale retracts from Earl Aune (if he will make another set for me ), full lighting set, dropable center tank/bomb, scale dummy radial, maybe movable canopy, scale cockpit, recessed panel lines, rivets...
I was thinking about powering the ship with a Laser 300v turning a 22" Solo 3-blade.

A little bit about myself, I studied Aeronautical Engineering for 5 years, was a R&D development engineer for Fokker Special Products (belonged to Fokker Aircraft) for a year before I became a commercial pilot 8 years ago with Lufthansa, flying 747-400 now.
I've had about 15 years experience designing planes with AutoCad and have been playing with Rhinoceros for 3D modelling lately, but prefer AutoCad.

So I can help draw/design anything in AutoCad and fly to the USA regularly, especially LA (My favorite, but we fly to around 15 destinations in the USA) which can come in handy for mailing stuff and if there is beer to be drunk (especially the beer...).

This is gonna be an excellent project!

Cheers,

Horizontal Stabilizer Beta Build Report
Part 1
Part 2 continues on Post 235

Considerations: - Allow for scale hinges

Apr 24, 2008 19:00
After detaching the stabilizer "S" parts, I dry fit the S4 and S5 pieces onto S1. The fit was perfect.
Then I dry fit S3 onto the parts assembled in the previous step and again the fit was perfect.
I clamped down the 4 "S1a" pieces and fit the 2 "S12" pieces into the slot. (I did not have the brass tubes that slide onto the elevator horn so the horn is in the picture just to show position.) There was a little bit of play with the "S12" parts. It's not much and the movement is horizontal whereas the stresses will be vertical. However, I would feel more comfortable adding a little bit of scrap balsa in the slot.
I will glue and clamp next but will wait until I have the brass tubes (bushing) in the 2 S12 pieces before I will glue them in place.

First impressions - nice fit, easy to assemble, strong, and lightweight

I made a little more tailwheel progress as well. I got all of the "hot" work finished and started to add some detail including:

  • Styrene fascia to simulate I-Beam look of Part B
  • Styrene facings at the tow hook attach points
  • Styrene filler blended with some ultracote at the bottom of the downtube

I hit everything with a dust coat of primer to make imperfections easier to see. Next steps - finishing touches on the detailing.
