Hello,

Its almost two months that I practise on the G4 and especially on the NexSTAR as an owner. After having 4 flights with my NexSTAR on the field I realised that the Real Flight G4 is surprisingly REAL as far as the NexSTAR is concerned. Turns, elevator, and generally handling the NexSTAR on the field is the same as handling the same plane with the SIM!! I can do rolls, turns and generally many basics aerobatics in G4 with minor to zero damages, but I am afraid to do the same in real life.

I was just wondering from your experience… Is the handling of the NexSTAR beyond basic moves (turns, takeoff, landing, etc..) is as real as the G4…. In other words can I do basic aerobatics with my NexSTAR or it will fall apart ?

Thanks in advance

Nick

A problem all the sims have with "real" is actually rather humorous.

A lot of our real models don't fly worth spit. A lot of us think the model would be safer if we moved the CG a little more forward than the most forward recommended CG. Some don't even check CG locations. Some don't know what it is. And there are ARF builders who figure the sucker is going to be perfect because there weren't any wrinkles when they pulled the parts out of the box, and certainly didn't look for warps. Not everybody is like that for sure, but that's one problem we have when a bunch start talking about "real" and comparing their real model with their sim.

It's to the sim developer's benefit to work out the models in their sim to be excellently trimmed examples of that model. And the default weather usually doesn't have any lumps in the air, like you favorite site has. One of my favorite fields has a ravine off one end of the runway. On some days, it's bumpy coming in from that direction. But only on the days when the winds blowing in the direction that requires you to come in that way...... grin....... You ain't gonna see many sims setup the weather simulation to do that.

So are they all incapable of giving realistic weather? I got my RealFlight setup with the wind speed fluctuating and with thermal activity turned up enough to have bumps.

I happen to have a number of models that RF has available. Darned if they don't fly pretty much the same on the pc as they do at the field. But RF doesn't have any runway I've found with a ravine off the end.

Interesting story that applies.

I noticed a particular model in the sim seemed to fly significantly better in the sim than it did in real life. I got the owner to let me mess around with the model a bit. I got him to move his "super safe" CG back some. Adjusted the droop out of his aileron linkage. And flew the sucker. We had to reduce the elevator throw a bunch because of the more sensible CG, but all in all it flew ten times better. I doubt I'd have bothered if I hadn't noticed how unlike real life the sim model had felt.

See the problem with judging how real the sims are compared to our models?

The Yak on 3.5 flies somewhat like my EF 74 inch Yak.
My real ones seem to be a bit better than the ones on the sim,but it takes a alot of work to make them like that.
I flew heli on the sim (80 hours +or-) and was doing just fine after I built my Trex 450. I find it translates quite well to the field.
It may not be completely realistic, but for learning or for the experienced to practice complex moves it is an excellent tool.
Not sure about the nexstar, but when I built my own trainers I found them to be indestructible in the air, when trying to do aerobatics.
I had 3 trainers that I used to abuse with huge G loads and full throttle anything. If its an ARF i would not go that far,but a few beads of glue around acessible joints would be a good idea if you want to practice agressive flying.

From my experience the sim is real to the point of getting the sticks moving in the right way. there is still nothing like real stick time. I have only had a sim a few months now to and the progression in my flying skills is amazing. I spent a few weeks learning how to do rolling circles on the sim as it was something i always wanted to learn. On the day i spent about 1 hour going round and round walked out to the park and presto i could do them. I was ecstatic i could do them. i can now rip them out when ever i fell like. My nexted trick is rolling harries i can do them on sim but not really tried on my plane yet thats still coming. to cut a long story short a few weeks ago i was flying my trainer around and just for fun tried doing a rolling circle and bugger me the plane i have been flying for 10 years now can do them, not pretty but its do able. So i would say yes if the sim plane can do basic moves the big chance is yes it can in real life.

Well for me G4 is nothing more than a hand/eye coordination trainer. I do not own any of the models on G4 but I use the sim to help me sort out complex manuevers that I don''t have the guts to try with my real models. I have learned harriers, waterfalls, blenders, etc with G4 and it translates well to real life. Plus it is alot of fun to set up cross winds to practice. My field almost always has a crosswind so it has been good practice for my thumbs. I have seen a large improvement to my flying abilities and instincts since I started using G4 and I have been flying over 10 years!
