Other than the fact that the newer 80" Edge kits come with a foam fuse core are there any other advantages like weight or flying characteristics?

Depends on which "old" Edge you are referring to. The original 80" Edge was built up wood fuse and a three piece wing. A little different wing as well. The newest style which has been in kit and ARF before is a two piece wing that mounts on the fuse like most of the other profiles do. The ailerons therefore go all the way to the fuse so you get a little better response in hovers and slow speed flight (more rons in the propwash).

The kit was purchased around 5 years ago.

I've been flying for a couple years now, and foamies indoors, and I'm really interested in this kit. Here's the thing though, I've come up in the age of ARF's and things like covering aren't foreign to me but the lack of experience in covering and kit building makes me ask"Is this kit suitable for a person w/fabrication skills and moderate to intermediate level skills?" And all my foamies are scratch built, some building skills are there, just wondered if the same applies to this edge? Thanks

You should be fine Cub and there are plenty of folks here to help if you have questions. The big Edge isn't that hard to build but does require the unique process of sheeting foam cores. Again, not hard if you take your time and prepare everything correctly.

Crash, the old kit you have from 5 years ago - does it have foam cores or all wood fuse?
