I'm guessing I will be need some sort of special equipment.

Thing is that I have tones to AA Rechargeable and a 4 or 5 7.2V packs sitting around. Plus I'd like to know just for the heck of it.

So how do I do it? Is there a formula?

I've done a search but really couldn't figure out a keyword to search for.

What equipment do I need.... something affordable.

It is hard to do with nickel batts.

Comparing against a known voltage value may give an indication , but may not be any closer than a guess. If it's been so long since the use that you can't remember how long you used them for then they should be thought of as empty.

There is two equipment that may or may not help without a baseline teast to compare.
