This isn't gonna be a story you are going to want to hear ...but..
I went to an auction a few years ago, a barn full of planes..there was the same plane you are building framed up, dusty from setting so long ...price $5

It was sorta heavy, and I don't think we could have even hauled it home.. But my buddy and I have kicked ourselves a few times since then.

Continuing with the build.

Day 32

NOTE: Don't buy your covering until you are nearing the point of covering. There are so many color schemes available for this plane that you may pick a scheme at the start of the build and see something that you like better before finishing.

The vertical fin.

Day 33

There is some part confusion as well as a missing part in my kit.
The ply-wood piece that is used for mounting the rudder control horn (R5) is missing. There are 3 pieces marked R3 and only 2 of them are correct. The other R3 most nearly represents the missing R5.
I cut up a piece of the ply-wood engine mount to replace the missing R5.
As you can see, I have added more gussets. My reasoning is that the rudder will be tapered creating less area for attachment. I put the gussets in to aid in adding strength. Here again, overkill, but it makes me feel better. Nobody can see what’s under the covering anyway.

The horizontal stabilizer.

Day 34 - 35
The plans say to make 2 elevators the same plan. It works out fine because all you have to do if flip one over for the opposite side.
I have inserted an additional piece of balsa in the areas where I intend to put the hinges.
Build the stabilizer and sand to shape.

The wing area over the cockpit.

Day 34 – 35
This is what the plans show.
So far, this is what I have done.
Extra reinforcement makes sense to me for this area.
As you can see, I have added Gussets and additional ¼ x ¼ reinforcements.
I’ve never had the experience of building a wing tube type plane.
This is an interesting experience for me. I like the idea.
I had initially glued one of the aluminum tubes in the wrong place and it cost me a half day in “undoing it and correcting it.

The wing.

Day 37

HEY! There are plans for only one wing! This sucker will never fly!
Back to the instruction manual. Hmmmm.
Turn the plans over and apply WD-40.
I turned the plans over and all it did was SHOW the wing upside down.
Ohhhh, turn them OVER.
That’s better.
Here we go with the wing.

Ron,
Looks like you are doing a great job. I live in Jacksonville, too. I know you from a company I used to own, TSPI. I have also seen you at the flying field a couple times. I noticed your note about covering from Tower. Certainly nothing wrong w/ that, but I have found that I REALLY like the uncertified aircraft dacron from Aircraft Spruce and Specialty. It is a LOT less expensive than anything we buy for models, is very lightweight and strong, shrinks very nicely. It does require an adhesive. I have been using Balsarite and it works well. Fill it with either water-based polyurethane or polycryllic and paint with Rustoleum spray cans. Easy to get a very nice finish that is VERY strong.

Also, I saw that you are planning on an ST3000 for the plane. Have you considered a small gasser such as a G-26 or maybe a weedeater conversion? That would work very well is this plane, give very scale flight acteristics and a LOT cheaper to fly (almost NO gooey stuff on the plane either...)...

Best wishes, I look forward to watching this thread as you finish the plane. I hope to see it in person at the field...

Ernie

Hi, Ernie!
I've already purchased the covering but I will consider the Dacron on my next model. Thanks for the tip.
As far as the engine goes, I have to agree with you as a G-26 would be great.
I'm just using what I have on hand right now.
Do you think that the G-26 would be a good engine for the giant scale Bud Nosen Citabria?
I'll have to start saving my pennies for it.
As you know, it is spring here in Florida and there is a lot of yard work to do.
My building time is becoming limited.
The thread will slow down considerably after the build is done.
I may not be able to complete the covering before summer ends.
You may get a chance to see a couple of new planes this year. I am almost done building my trailer.

Ernie,

Your tip regarding the Dacron intrigued me and I am curious as to how do you estimate the amount of material to order. I am finishing a Senior Tele which will look great in a fabric covering. Also, could you elaborate a little more on the weave filling procedure?

Thanks,

Hi there:
I was checking to find if any one has heard from A&A Ind. and if they are still in bussiness? I bought 3 Mister Mulligans kits to build and resale from him and can't seem to find the web sight now or the address and phone when I bought them. I always thought he would be there for a year or two anyway. Any help would be greatly apprecated.
I have a bud neson citabria that I fly and I put the super tiger 3000 in it and the main problem is that the nose wants to climb in a turn. I tried to put more down thrust in the plane then my elevator need more up. It seem that I was fighting it more and it was easier just to make a coorinated turn you know rudder, ailerons, elevator and a little throttle and it flys and looks like the real one. The G26 gas engine would be a better pick more weight which the citabria needed. But if you ever flown a full size plane then you know about a coorinated turn and not just fly ailerons and elevator, which a lot of fast models thats all you need.
So in the mean time keep the props spinning. Because like the full size ones it was put there to keep the pilot cool AND IF THE PROP STOPS
(you know)

The pilot gets HOT
