Hi everyone!

I recently visited my local hobby shop and found these deals:

Quasar 02010 $44
Insane Foamie Solara $30
Shock Flyers:

Extrema A330 $20
Superstar $20
Yak $20

I have never flown 3d but would like to try it.

Can anyone tell me which is a good starter model and is the price right?

Thank you,

Freddy

Yes, the shockflyers are still considered great planes and an exceptional value-- especially at $20!

They actually started the indoor foamie craze several years ago and although there are newer designs, it's possible to build a state of the art machine using the kit parts with some good component selection and a few mods.

Windjunkie,

Thank you for your reply. Could you kindly let me know which deal seems the best and which plane would fly best?

Thank you,

All the shockies are equally good. I like the Edge 540 for indoor and the yak for outdoor.

The absolute best flying foamie hands down is a DW Foamies Yak 54. I've tried Charger RC, and they don't compare to a DW Foamies Yak 54 38".

I'm building a Charger CR1 right now with a Park 450 motor and 4 HS-56's. It costs right at $350 COMPLETELY ready to fly, and I mean with props, prop saver, FlightPower 1345 3s1p battery, servos, Rx, adapters, chords, cables, charge cord, foam safe CA, accelerator and everything else to go with it. I've spent five hours on it and only have a couple more hours left.
The hardware is simply awesome and the quality of the plane is amazing! It's my first foamy, and I'd recommend it to anyone...as far as the building process goes. I'll have a flight report up in the Foamies section right after I maiden it. If the wind is okay, I'll maiden it tomorrow! All foamies are going to be OKAY...you'll never get a foamy that flies poorly. Whatever you go with, fly the crap out of it!!

^ You haven't tried a DW Foamies yak 54 yet. You will find it much better than any charger plane. Plus Mike has motor/ESC/servo combos for $100 as well as $19 1300 mah lipos. The combo includes a (I think) 160 watt brushless outrunner, a brushless ESC, and four Hitec HS65 servos (or whatever you prefer).

Total, you can get a DW Yak flying for under 200 bucks, unlike your charger. My first charger took me about an hour to complete, and that was with pretty quick assembly. Flew great, untill I got a DW Foamies Yak 54, which flew 10x better

I was at RCX last saturday, and a guy had a shock flyer, which flew really good with whatever power setup he was using. Flew awesome in the confined space that was the flight line, and even took a few beatings from the overhead rafters.

Victor,

Thanks for all the great info. I'm sure the CR1 is a great foamie. Unfortunately, I am on a very limited budget so I could only afford the Yak that was on sale for $20. I hope to purchase a nicer plane sometime in the future.

Have a great day and keep flying high!

Freddy

Lil'banchee,

THank you for the heads up. I am going to visit a website that shows the DW Foamies Yak 54 so I can learn more about it. It does sound like an awesome plane and an awesome deal too. I will keep saving so I can afford one soon.

Thank you,

Freddy

The shockys made from EPP foam are much more durable than the Depron ones too, especially when you land tail first.

Our hobby owes a lot to the humble shock flyer. It really opened a whole new level of performance (think 4D) and new possibilities, especially with flat plate foam wings. They can cocoon you into a sense of security with their slow flying characteristics at low control surfaces, or amaze you with crazy aerobatics on high rates. I think the general consensus is the lighter you build them the better they fly and the more likely crash damage will be minimal so it is worth while taking a bit fo extra time and care with glue etc as the end result will be worth it. Shockies are mostly designed to fly slowly, just floating around the sky instead of ripping around at 80mph. Most don't like wind, even slight breezes can take the edge off their performance.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is YES! they are good.
