Over the past few months, I have been messing around with a little EDF that I call the Fishbed Foamy Mig-21. I had purchased an EDF kit last year that was built out of Depron and it used a 50mm fan set-up. I was very disappointed at the flying characteristics of that little bird. It just wasn't very much fun to fly. It tended to snap in tight turns and it wouldn't fly inverted at all. So. I decided to see what I could come up with. I designed and drew a Mig 21 to fit the fan in CAD. Then I built a little balsa toss model to verify the CG and incidence. I had little wire hinges on the elevators for adjustment...The thing literally "flew off the building board"! In fact, it would glide at least 50 yards with a good toss! I built the full-size version out of 6mm Depron and it flies GREAT! It's fast, it turns tight, it does really good extreme high AOA flight and most surprising of all, it flies very well inverted and can do OUTSIDE LOOPS! I have caught it in my hand on landing several times, but most of the time I "Harrier land" it at the flying field with no forward motion. I like the thing so much that my flying buddy have taking everyones advice and we have decided to kit it. We have formed a company, Jets N Stuff to market it. Check it out at www.jetsnstuff.com. We have completed the initial production run and we are ready to ship.

Tailwinds,

John

John,

That is really neat. The Mig-21 is one of my favorite planes. I'm going to visit your site right now.

Regards, Bill

Thanks Bill,

The site has a few bugs, but we are working on it. The Mig is a blast to fly! Every time I take it to the field or park, I just giggle and have a great time. It's a good "after hours" bird at the jet rally or park near your home.

Tailwinds,

John

John,

Could you add some details? What fan/motor/battery/esc are you using. What are the dimensions of the model? TIA!

Free Bird,

The Mig is powered by a Himax EPF-50 fan. This fan comes assembled, dynamically balanced, ready to run from the factory with a HB 2410-4100 brushless motor. Additionally, it is available with a generic ESC as a combo (fan, motor, ESC) for $79.99. I have used a Castle Phoenix 25 ESC with the fan and I couldn't tell the difference. The "cheapie" ESC works very well. We have been using Tanic 3S-1760 Li-pos and they deliver 6 to 7 minutes a full throttle flying and they are available on the site as well.

Typical weight is 13.5 oz. with a Spektrum AR 6100 RX, 2 Hitec Hs-56 servos and a Tanic 3S-1760 battery.
The length is 34.8" and the wing span is 20.6" The kit sells for $59.95

Tailwinds,

John

NEWS FLASH......Good news for all you Alfa Fan owners with no place to put the fan anymore! We have a customer who installed one in the Mig-21 and he says it " Flies good and fast".

We attended the Electric Jet Expo here in Phoenix this past weekend and I flew a bunch. The Mig with the 50 mm fan was just right for the large indoor venue.

John

Check this out from last weekend: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDOXYLyV4mU

Rick and I had a great time. I hated running through his bird though. It was too much fun chasing one another!

The Mig and A-4 fly well in large indoor venues as well as outdoors

John

Let me chime in. I have built 3 Mig 21's and I found it easy to build, very aerobatic and the slow flight characteristics are unbelievable. I have yet to stall it. Great job!

I was cleaning up the hard rive on my desktop and I came across this video of the prototype Mig flying. It was done by one of my fly'in buddies last September. It was hot and windy...............We had given up for the day and put our turbine models back in the car so I launched the Mig for some fun and Wayne shot the video. Check it out here:

I just got this message from a customer:

Hi,
I'm the guy that bought a Mig21 from you guys on Sat. of the Phx. Expo.
First I want to say, that so far the build is pretty much falling together.
Great instructions, clever, if not brilliant design. When I first walked
into the stadium, I saw your red 21 in flight. It took about 3 seconds before I
realized I had to have one. Love at first sight thing......................

Another happy Mig driver!

We have guys flying the Mig with the standard 50 mm Hi-Max fan, the 56 mm Hi-Max fan and one with the 59 mm Alfa fan. You can't beat that for versatility!

Tailwinds,

John
