chumanji -> shrink wrap for A123 ??? (4/10/2008 5:39:42 PM)

what size shrink wrap do I need for A123 cells, if I were to make a side by side pack.

2300 mAh cells side by side you need 56 mm. Correction 83 mm

How to measure. Measure around pack divide by two ,that is the mininum size you need. Most shrink wrap will shrink approx. 50% so a little larger is fine.

Hmmm. I posted here yesterday and now it's gone? Anyway, 56mm is too small. It's more like 3.5" to wrap two widthwise, and 4.5" for lengthwise.
I get my shrinkwqrap from www.batteryspace.com. look for DIY shrinkwrap...

75mm , just under 3", will fit two A123 M1 cells side by side with the cardboard still on. Although you can use larger I have found that the smaller you use the better the ends look. I get mine from www.radicalrc.com. Great service also. I have about 5 different sizes I got for various size packs. You should look under "Batt Packs & Heat Shrink" then "Pack Parts & Heat Shrink" then scroll down to "Pack Heat Shrink." They also have all of the other pack making parts.

To measure your cells tape them together then wrap a piece of paper around them and mark where the paper touches. Tape the paper together at the mark then press the paper loop flat. Measure the flattened piece of paper and select the next size of shrink larger than the paper measurement.

One option is to go to MEC Products and get either the complete packaged A123 pack or they sell a plastic sleave for 1 and 2P packs.

Best, Dennis

I use a 95mm/3-5/8" shrink wrap for my 2-cell packs

Here's a cool idea! I just rebuilt my 6 cell 3s2p pack in a triangular 2cell long pack. I used a water bottle for the shrink wrap! Worked great, I just covered the ends with some cardboard and electrical tape, cut the top and bottom off the bottle and the pack fit right in! It shrunk up real nice. I think you could probably fit a sideways flat pack into it too. Larger packs you can try the one liter pop bottles. Just be sure to not heat it to fast or too hot or holes will open up. If done right this could work for all sorts of packs!

That or Cheapbatterypacks.com has the 135mm shrink tubing, but they're currently out of stock. That's why I went with the water bottle!

Great idea. I just wonder if you could take a large litre bottle cut a piece off and wrap a pack and glue a seam with CA to make the plastic tight then heat shrink it? Or maybe some epoxy to glue the plastic at the seam?

just pick a bottle that's close to the size you need. Most plastic bottles will shrink about 1/2 original size or smaller....

Wow, I just tried that. I put three pieces of 1" dowel in a triangle pack config inside a 16oz. drinking water bottle and hit it with my heat gun. It shrunk down tight. Me likey. [:D]
