I'd love to build some of Ivan's birds, but with the winds we have around here (near Lake Michigan) those lightweight electrics just don't do well.

Bob,

Yes I did get a quote on the kit and I'm just deciding when to jump in!! I've got an Ivan P. Short Sealand on my build bench at the moment that I'm trying to finish. Too many planes and not enough time. It sure appears that your Catalina build is going rather smoothly. God bless laser cut kits!! I've since discovered that I'm not a true scratchbuilder, I don't like creating the kit as my accuracy just isn't there.

Later,
Freddy

Unless the kit is really reasonably priced, I'll probably cut my own. With a bench sized bandsaw and a disc sander, I can do anything.

What do you consider reasonably priced? This is a short kit, no sheeting and no hardware.

The wings are unpluggable, although you are also supplied parts and plans for a one-piece wing. Greg's time and materials are definitely worth more than 50-75 buck. Would you cut a kit for that price??? I think not. Thanks for the good words. Mike

lazer-works.com does lots of short kits in that price range, or less.

My AK models SU-27 kit was laser cut, and is complete with all sheeting cut to size for $130.

My point is that I like making my own parts, and a short kit has to represent a break even before I'll go for it.

p38nut,

Are you going to build your wings unpluggable? Dont suppose we can have a sneak preview of the section of the plan? Very curious to se how they propose to achieve it . . .

p38nut,

Ordered my Fred Novack 72" PBY / plans and they are in transit. Can hardly wait to get started. How's it going with your build?

Freddy

Hallo!
I've just found this thread.....beautiful laser-cut kit!

I'm reading as much as I can on the PBY Catalina and I've "collected" many informations on various Catalinas:

- Guillows' PBY-5a: too small INMHO.

- Great Planes' ARF Catalina: not accurate scale reproduction.

- HVP Modell's PBY-6: VERY beautiful ARF or ARC.....cheap......beautifull, but still small.

- Kyosho's Catalina: out of stock.

- Aeronaut's PBY 6/6A: fantastic......and VERY EXPENSIVE!

- Ivan Pettigrew's Mini Catalina: unfortunately NO laser cut kit available.

Do you think that the Fred Nowak 72" Catalina kit could be conversted to electric power without major modifications??
Can you tell the estimated weight of the finished airframe?

Thank -you and sorry for my English!

This plane could easily be converted to electric. Hull is cavernous and would be well suited to batteries. Don't know about the finished weight.
Thanks. Mike

Hallo!
Maybe I've found another source for a set of laser-cut parts of the 72" PBY-5A Catalina designed by Fred Novack:

http://www.kitcutters.com/Nov/NovPBY5A.htm

As you can read the FULL WOOD KIT is 220 USD (about 140 euros).

The plans are sold by Vintagercplans for 26.95 USD.

http://www.vintagercplans.com/order.htm

......and you can have the side gun blisters and engine cowls for just 16,10 USD.

Very, very interesting.......well I NEED MORE PHOTOGRAPHS....come on Mike!!!!!!

Ciao from Italy!

Ettore:

I think kitcutters has refused to take any new orders for at least the last two years. At least, that's what it says on their website. It's always the same old story with them.

precisioncutkits.com is the only one I know of that lists the plans and is taking orders. They might be a bit pricey, but if you don't own the equipment to cut parts, it's probably cheaper to buy a kit than buy all the tools.

I've been trying to track down Mike without any luck. Seems he has disappeared. I'd like to see if he's made any more progress on the Catalina build. Nice build while it was happening!

Yeah, I hope Mike is still building it, and that he posts some more pics. That project is a real inspiration. I just returned from a club float fly on Wixom Lake, in Mich., and I'm getting the itch to start another waterbird to add to my Arrow and Mariner.
