Hi everybody!

Has anyone got one of these Kalderen & Welch WW1 ARF planes? The planes look pretty darn good to me and I ordered one. The DH4. It's wingspan in the 100" region but apparently the planes are built very light, so a 120 size 4-stroke will be enough to fly it. I will be installing a Laser 180 because I have one and I'm not using it in any plane at the moment.

It will take 2-3 weeks until I get the DH4 so I thought to ask around for opinions about the K&W products. It's a relatively new company, so I'm guessing there's not much knowledge about these models yet...

Here's a link to their site:

The DH4 can be found here:

Cheers,

Tero

Well... It turned out that Kavan, the European distributor of these models, didn't have the DH4, and the estimated delivery time was around 6 months... So I changed to plan B and got the SE5a instead. 1/5 scale as well, ~1,6 meter wing span.

I've included some pictures of the quality of the 'kit'. It took me around 7 hours to get the installations done. The only slightly complicated part was to connect the ailerons. The ailerons are controlled by two pushrods that enter the fuselage at the middle of the bottom wing. Unfortunately it was nearly impossible to get at these rods, since the bottom of the fuselage got in the way... Hence I cut out some of the bottom planking, and got the installations done. I soldered the rods together with some brass tube to beef up the soldering, and connected a servo to this rod. The downside is that now I can't remove the bottom wing.

I used a Laser 80 for power, which seems to be just about enough for scale type flying. On maiden flight I had the CofG slightly back and the plane was very sensitive for elevator. I added 100 grams of lead in the nose and also I will add some washers under the rear engine bolts to get some down thrust.

The plane flies very slowly and looks very real in the air. I just wish it was a bit bigger. The pilot is from scaleaircrewsupplies.com and has a servo installed to turn the head with the rudder.

EDIT: Yeah, I know the pilot is WW2 era. Please ignore this, as I'm making it look more the part...

cheers,

Tero
