Is there anybody here that has this plane? I am a newbe and I really want this plane. I have real flight g4 and have been flying on it for about a mounth. The reason I like this plane is because it has the pts droops that can be removed. My father is 85 and was in wwII. I know that he will enjoy building it and going to the air field to see it fly.

Can be a royal pain to keep straight on the takeoff roll, especially for someone with no tail dragger experience. Real Flight is great for learning the basics, but it doesnt translate to the real world as well because the actual physics arent possible to be duplicated(friction from the wheels, bumps in the runway, ground effect wind, etc.). Real flight is a good teacher and most ppl would recommend it, but, planes dont stall in the simulator very often and this is a bad thing since it doesnt teach you how to react. there are aspects you can fiddle with in the simulator, but it still doesnt emulate a real rc plane to the degree necessary to go directly to flying a low wing plane even with droops on it. Its too easy to fly a plane in realflight, but its done that way to give ppl confidence. Get someone who has flown a lot and get help from an instructor. Real flight also doesnt teach you anything about needle settings and anythign related to setting and maintaining the engine.

ejam, i have this plane and like it very much, BUT it flys alot different than trainers. can a newbie learn to fly on it yes. but it is more advisable as a second plane. with that said your best bet is to get with the club instructor and talk to them about it and see if they are willing to train you on it. quite a few instructors have taught people on it and like it and others wont train people on it . its one of those either love it or hate things [:D] hope this helps. bassman

We have one at our field, I taught the first owner to fly it, it was his second trainer, his fist was a Cub. It is presently on it's 3rd owner and every one of them has been very happy with it. I was very surprised how docile it was with all the training gear on it, not like a warbird at all. remove the gear and you have a real semi-aerobatic bird that is still easier than an exact scale warbird to land, and flaps too, even easier. The motor is still going strong. I would recommend them.

Well I do know alot about the glow engines, and I have played around with the E-flight Jenny4 and a hobbyzone firebird phantom. What I have learned from the jenny has help me some, like the amount of throw on the rudder and elv. I had mine set way too much and caused me to crash many times. The good news is my wife has agreed to let me buy a real beginner plane like the hobbyzone cub. We went to the lhs yesturday and the guy there was telling me to get an easy plane first that will take a beating. The thing is I have flown the cub in realflight g4 and after a few min. I am bored with it. But now my plan is to by something like the hobbyzone cub and the arf hanger9 p51. I will lean to fly on the cub, as I build the p51.

AS you've stated, the cub is pretty boring. When i started, I opted for something with a lot of wing area, but still had ailerons and some oomph for once I got used to flying. I also practiced on the simulator(G3) alot. I picked up the Parkzone Typhoon as my first plane. This thing was a great learning plane. Huge wings, low weight, and more then ample power. Since you've flown the E-flite Jenny already, you have some basics down. I might recommend the PZ Typhoon as a next step before flying the PTS P-51. The newer PZ Typhoon2 comes with lipo battery as well in teh RTF package. Just so you know, the typhoon is a foam plane an easy to fix if needed. It lands super easy too, but, its not a high wing trainer so it will go where you point it and will not self correct liek a high wing dihedral wing kinda does. Its up to you what you want to get, but I think you could handle the Typhoon if you've flown the Jenny and firebird phantom before. http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=PKZ4300

Thanks for all the info. I did buy the supercub. Went to fly it on a windy day, not good. Did some damage to the rear wing, and broke the prop. pulled out my hobbyzone firebird phantom and had a blast. It was alot easier to fly in the wind, although I did crash it but only because the sun blinded me. I went thursday and bought the hanger 9 p51 rtf, but had to return it because of damage. So I had my lhs order me the arf p51. And bought the parkzone t28 trojan to have fun crashing. Now that I am going with the ARF hanger 9 p51, what do you suggest as far as engine and servos. I have the spektrum DX7 and receiver but no servos. Man, I have really been bitten by the r/c plane bug, Im also helping my three boys build some guillows kits![:D]

Servos for the P-51: Jr 537 for the flaps Jr DS821 for everything else. If you want to keep the cowl lookign a lot more stream line looking, use a 4-stroke and not a 2 stroke so you dont have a big homking mufller sticking out the side. When I built one of the P-51 's for my son, I put a saito 56 in it and it flew well. I routed the muffler pipe out the bottom using a right angle adapter. For more oomph, you could put a saito 72 in it and it'll still take up the same space. The first 3 pics show the installation with a little black muffler pipe(has a pressure tap already built in). This part is lsited for the 170 saito radial. It fits the saito 56 as they are the same cylinder exhaust port size. The muffler pipe on this one is from the saito 325 radial and is a flexible brass pipe. Works really well. Fits motors from a saito 65 up to a 100. Again, a properly sized right angle adapter is used. This muffler pipe is setup in the plane initially mounted where the pipe would be sticking straight up towards to the top of the plane. i learned to fly on this air craft . it is now one of my favorite planes to fly . that was about five years ago and about a million flights later . i too own a cub . to tell ya the truth i really don`t care to fly it , it makes me nervous . people tell me that it is supposed to be a simple airplane to fly ,for the most part it is .i guess it is too doggy in the air. that is my first and last experience with any type of high wing . i was lucky , i have some friends that have alot of time on the "stix" to help me along the training road . this in my opinion is a great trainer . jay P.S nice job on the engine/cowl kahog . good idea

Well I just picked up my hanger9 pts p51 mustang!!!! [:D]The arf kit has more to build than I thought. I had thought about the 4stroke, but will go with an os .46 to keep cost down. I plan to take my time with the build, because I am still learning to fly. I havent flown my t28 trojan yet. Its been 11 seccessful flights with the supercub. And landings are good, only a few have ended with a nose tip, but that is mainly because of the grass causing it to nose dive. I would like to know how the .46 evolution engine is compaired to the os .46. I can pick up the evolution engine with prop and spinner for 79.00 from hobbyzone. The os .46 will cost 105.00

I just installed a Magnum XLS .52 in my H-9 PTS P-51. She's had well over 500 flights between the original owner and myself. The old os .46 was blowing oil out of every nook and cranny, and was turning into a dog. The new engine is not totally broken in, and is still running a little rich, but man, what a difference! High speed low passes take on a whole new meaning,,,,,[:D]

hello anyone know where to buy a good set of retracks for this bird?Dont want to put stock hangar9 on it to cheap!!bird does not have them installed yet I want to convert to retracts[:D]I saw somewhere the retracts with the plastic cups that glue into the wing[sm=50_50.gif] does that make any sense?I just bought this bird with out the electronics/motor for only$70 on E-Bay. so I would like to really do it up right.I also want to put the biggest motor on it with out to many mods to frame Ireally like what kahlog did with his motor really nice!!

i bought a P51D 1.50 Mustang from Hangar9 and i'm searching for a gas engine(2 strokes),can anybody tell me if the Zenoah 26 electronic ignition can fit on the cowling ?thank you

The PTS mustang is really an awesome plane. I have one with an O.S. 55 AX 2 stroke with a 12x8 master airscrew prop and the thing is a missle (minus all of the training gear). Hands down one of the fastest planes at our field (we're guessing but figuring between 80 and 100 mph), I've put it in a dive with a tail wind at full throttle and then yank back on the elevator sending it straight up in the air without the airframe buckling or the wings folding. My brother bought one to learn how to fly with and I was so impressed with the plane that I bought one for myself just for the thrill of it.
