Well....she'll be here on Monday...made my final desicion seeing it in person in Toledo. Any one try a canister on the Python? Would there be not enough room to do this?

I don't think there's enough room. With the access door, gear plate and wing mount on the bottom, I don't think there's enough room for the tunnel.

I was thinking that...and also loosing the conveniant thottle servo area also. And we must have that wing on..

Its a great, fun plane to fly, and what fun is a bipe if you can't hear it? I don't know if you're planning on smoke or not, but it usually sux in a canister.

I finally got the 3W 55iCS in for mine.. its been sitting since February when I sold the DA50 out of it. I got it started this afternoon, but I still have some throttle management to work on before I fly it again. Maybe next weekend.

Cool... Lets just say I have an SU26 ( buy someone esle) with a can with smoke. Had the can modified for smoke before delivery. Being cooler where injected..smoke not too good....I ended up making a preheater wrapped around the header pipe with 1/8 OD copper tubing ,....5.5 ft..sealed with high heat rtv and teflon tape. Worked out really well. Smokes great. Burns so not much at all residue. I will be using a DA50 with slim line modified for smoke pitts muffler from an Exta Patty Wagstaff being retired. Here is some pics of the pre heater.

Hi Guys

I modified my Python to take a JMB60/60/270 cannister, I also have a set of CNC cut formers available if anyone is interested.

I also installed one of the new MT57 engines.

Man, that looks like a great canister modification job.. just one question... do you plan to have a sheet of wood or something in between the canister and the fuel tank?

I finally got mine back in the air today after a 2 month down spell... still a VERY fun plane to flip around!

I don't know where you got the idea that smoke sucks in a canister...have you ever tried it? if you mount the smoke nipple in the header pipe about an inch below the exhaust port you can make smoke to your heart's content. chances are if you tried it, you probably fed the smoke fluid directly into the canister, although that still makes smoke, it is not as good as the header pipe....using a gasser you do not need to preheat the smoke fluid like you do with a glow engine...and you get less residue with a gasser as well as you get a more complete burn, try Super dri or Almag Oil (lightweight machine cutting oil made by Texaco, very similar to Super dri but less expensive)

Yes, I've heard that putting a nipple in the header would make great smoke. I've never tried it on cans, just Pitts mufflers. I've seen a few planes using cans and the "standard" smoke connections on those, and it was a mess. Very little smoke, and lots of mess to clean up.

Well I have been using the smoke nipples from Bisson Mufflers in Ontario Canada, however I take a pair of vice grips and close the hole down a little bit so it is a very small hole, it seems to atomize the smoke oil better. I then drill a hole the correct size for an 8/32 thread, thread the hole and then have a 8/32 hex nut silver soldered or brazed to the header pipe over the hole. It gives you added material to thread the nipple into on the header pipe. I then use JB WELD and thread the nipples into the hex nut and this leaves about 1/8 of the smoke nipple protruding into the header pipe. Just be sure that the nipple is NOT pointed towards the exhaust port of your engine, your pump could push smoke oil back into the engine during low RPM's and cause havoc with your engine. I find this makes excellent smoke HOWEVER there is only one draw back to this, it is not an instant off of the smoke. If you shut your pump off at a particular time, you will still get some residual smoke as it empties out of the canister, not a bad thing unless you are timing smoke on and off to music! The key to good smoke is burning the oil at the hottest point, with the smoke nipple in the header pipe, an inch away from the exhaust port, you wont get any hotter than that other than right in the exhaust port!
