Sam I am always looking for pictures of the P-38 so if you have them I could use them. I'm using the picture attached at this point and a few in a book I have. I am recessing the canopy frame so it will be flat when attached to the fuselage. To do this I have built a flange that be will cut down after the canopy is attached to it. This is taking somewhat longer than I expected but should look very nice when completed. I had to cut the joint between the rear glass section and have to glass it back together after I get the canopy to fit the flange, it looks like I will only have to remove 1/8" off each side to get a good fit. I did not do a full trim on the canopy yet because I knew it was going to take some tweeking to get right and wanted to make sure I did not have to go back and add more material and this has paid off. As I get the fit better I will open up the window areas and shape them to look like the fullscale. Pictures to follow

This is the surgery I had to do to get the canopy ready for a finial fit. As you know I made a mold from the outside of the clear canopy and got a good fit to the clear canopy but not to the fuselage. My new frame was just a little too large to get the fit I was looking for so after some thought I figured the only way to fix this was to cut out 3/16 from the back area of the frame. Once I made the cut the frame laid down flat All I had to do now was repair the fiberglass and finish trimming. I couldn't trim the canopy frame until I had the fuselage to fit it to. I got a little ahead of my self but the fix was easy as you can see. After I removed the small sections of fiberglass I used thin CA and 1/2 oz. glass to make the repair, this is fast and easy. I then took the canopy to my sandblaster and removed any glass that was not bonded, again this is FAST. After sanding smooth and primed I did another trial fit. I like to get the canopy on my planes to look real good, it’s a section of a plane that everyone likes to look at and with a finished off cockpit the outer canopy just makes it look that much better. With a little more work on this one the fit will be good.

Greg she’s beautifulllllllll!!!!!!!!!! It looks like the Yellow Aircraft P-38 and you did a fantastic job building it. I definitely need a moral boost at this stage of my build and you sure have done that. I built and aluminum plated a Yellow p-38 about 34years ago and after we were finished showing it I sold it to a friend and then purchased it back from him about 7 months ago. Its now for sale on RCU and I have to tell you that if it doesn’t sell I won’t be sad Tell us more about you’re Lightning, it will give me another shot in the arm

I have been working on getting the gaps nice and tight and when I put the Lightning together and looked down those long wings I didn't like the gap that was caused by the aileron hinge so I took a 1/2 inch by 18 inch section of flite skin and recessed it into the wing in front of the aileron and keep it back far enough so the travel is correct on the aileron. I then blended it into the wing. I have nice 1/16 inch gaps on all the movable surfaces but still have to sand everything smooth and apply another coat of primer that I will not sand through. This helps keep the aluminum nice and even, more on that later.

Happy Holidays everyone

Ron

Hello Ron

Well ... is a courent ( winter )project running .The P-47 stalls, waiting for the spring to finish the paintjob. The Christen Eagle need some impulse to be continued most of the main woodwork is done, but ... I'm too lazzy sometimes. The bottom wing is done and covered, the fuse needs some finishing before the covering, only the upper wing need the ailerons and covering.

Fiesler The Storch is the newest "baby" in the workshop.Totaly scratch ( build based on real plane's drawings ).
Needed a "toy" for the spring ( I hope will go fast enough ), not too complicated and not too close to scale .All started from a pair of wings gifted by a friend.Need some mods and repairs and some "look" but the project is started and hope to be finished till the fine weather comes.

Wish You a New 2009, full of fine flights and successfull landings!

Your's
JIMMY

Real nice build Ron. I was talking to Joe at BRFR and he told me to ask you if you are making the wing fairing for other people? I'm working on the Ziroli P-38 right now and he suggested I contact you. Have you decided how you are going to attach the cowls?
Thanks
Jim

Jim a friend of Joe's is a friend of mine I have made 2 sets for other Lightning builders and was hoping to get some feedback from them but I dont think they have had a chance to install them. I did not get my cowls mounted yet but I think I might try keeping the mounting hardware inside the cowl. If you want you can stop by and I will show you the progress on this bird, I'm about 5 min. from BRFR. 121 N.Plains Ind Rd Just give me a call at 203 294-1314 to make sure I in
I'm very close to getting the first of the parts Aluminum Plated so the fun is about to begin

Paul that has to be hands down the most beautiful P-38 I have every seen, I feel for the guys that had to polish that out thanks for posting that

Hey Ron i've got a question for you. If you were going to polish your p-38 what would you use as a polishing compound. I've found this stuff to work on this other p-38 i'm working on and i'm using flite metal. Sorry just can't afford your process right now, but this is what i've experimented with to polish this plane when it's finished.

Bandit driver Never dull is a good product and has been around for a long time and very good for maintaining metal finishes. We use a product called Wicked it polishes and adds a protective moisture barrier that helps keep the oxidation down, its been applied to the Yellow Aircraft morphed in the attached pictures that is now back in out possession after 4 years . Your Lightning looks real nice I was just wondering if its possible to get the flight metal deeper into your gun ports with one sheet or do you have to use another one in the port itself?

I'm slowly getting more sections sent over to our plating room and I wanted to see how thing are adding up weight wise so I put the Lightning on the scale. With all the wood and plastic part on and primed it came in at 19 pounds and 2 oz. I wish I weighed the box of wood when I first got it from PKC, if someone out there is just starting their kit maybe you can weigh your box of wood parts for me. Now I figure 8 pounds of engines, 3 pounds for gear, and oh ya, 12 oz for our Aluminum finish + mis. paint and decals, custom cockpit and pilot. My goal of just over 40 pound has been set by Joe A the pilot and I was wondering how things added up with the other P-38s out there.

Thanks
Ron

As pretty as the Red Bull P-38 is, it comes at a price. Those of us who have been P-38 fans for any length of time at all will remember 'Lefty' Gardner's, White Lightnin'. Time marches on and warbirds get refurbished and repainted all the time, but this one seems particularly painful. It will be all but impossible to watch the Red BUll P-38 without envisioning it as it was with Lefty in the seat.

Whoever does fly this airplane will have some pretty big shoes to fill.

Marvin 'Lefty' Gardner passed away Dec. 24, 2008. He was 87.
