borna -> which synthatic oil is best denatured alcohol (4/14/2008 3:00:41 PM)

Hello all,
Recently I converted a glow engine to run on gasoline with spark ignition. It runs fine on gasoline/oil 50:1 ratio, however I don’t like the smell of the gas and since I want to put it in a RC plane I want to void the gas smell on the plane as well. I also don’t want to run it on glow fuel available at hobby shop because of the 25% oil in the fuel which also makes a big mess on the plane.
Since the engine now runs on spark ignition I also don’t need nitromethane and methanol as fuel, therefore decide to make my own fuel. Of course my primary choice is still to run it on alcohol because of the smell. Since I couldn’t find any methanol in South Florida, I decided to use denatured alcohol which I bought from a hardware store.

First I tried to mix it with 2 cycle oil used in lawnmower engines but that didn’t mix well. Then I tried Mobile synthetic oil and still didn’t mix well. Since I had some caster oil, I tried that and it did mix. Anyway I ran the engine with denatured alcohol and caster oil and got a good performance from it. The engine almost ran smokeless with no odor at all.

So here are some of the questions I have.
The engine starting was much harder compared when it ran with gasoline. Any idea what additive I can add to make it start a little easier?
Beside caster oil, what kind of synthetic oil mixes well with denatured alcohol?
Do I get any benefit by switching to methanol or both Denatured and methanol give me the same results?

Thanks
Kamran

Klotz makes some oil that mixes with alcohol and it may help to raise the compression ratio and richen mixture to start. Warming engine may also help starting.

Depending upon what you mean by denatured alcohol, it will be closer to gas than to alcohol. Methanol will make more power, but get far worse mileage and be even harder to start.

Thanks for the info.
By denatured alcohol I mean ethanol dinatured with methanol.

Thanks

Check out Klotz Techniplate. I think the web site is www.klotzlube.com If not just do a Google search for Klotz. Retaining a bit of castor in the mix may be a good idea.

Denatured alcohol is usually ETHANOL, denatured with METHANOL. Ethanol is not a suitable alcohol for model engine use in general. You need to get METHANOL, CH3OH and NOT ethanol.

this thread is for using E85 fuel
85% Ethanol 15% gasoline

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3219478/tm.htm

in that thread they decuss lubrication oils
Also there is a useful thread on converting spark ignition to glow where they use gasoline and methanol mixes

I suspect the issue for your engine with hard starting ethanol might be the ethanol would prefer higher compression ratios 9 :1 compared to gasoline 8:1 and spark ignition may not be best to ignite ethanol and methanol fuels

or more likly the Denatured Ethanol mix has a high water content as the Alchol family attract water easily Hygroscopic I think is the term

an that often makes those fuels difficult to use if the water content is too high

If you read the original post, I think we are discussing spark ignition. In general I agree that methanol is preferable for IC engines in general and virtualy mandantory for glow. Experiments, however, are interesting.

I would expect that any of the oils designed to mix with methanol would also mix well with ethanol. One of the limiting factors however, may be the moisture content of your ethanol. Since it''s a product distilled from a hi-water base, it''s not uncommon for denatured alcohol to have higher levels of moisture than methanol and that can cause some oils to drop out of suspension.

Methanol would be a far better fuel. It has a wider stoichiometric ratio (which means it''ll start easier) and the moisture content will likely be far lower. You''ll also have a good choice of synthetic oils that are proven in this application.
