In fact, let me ask here. my os 160 started to act funny as the weather got hotter here in florida. it is now hard to start. with perry pump and onboard glow, it was very easy at first, with a little prime and a flick of the prop, it started every time. now it takes a starter to get it started. runs excellent when running though. Any suggestions. I hate carrying that starter around.

The DLE 30 may be a better motor for the Seagull Extra. I hate to knock the motor, its just not the right motor for my airframe. The Cermark Extra (of course) or the TLT aviation Yak would be better matches. Their must be more 70"er's that would be a better fit. The DLE 30 produces 18 pounds of thrust. So... at 12 pounds 1.5:1 thrust to weight. Thats not adding the extra 16 ounces for the engine. The Extra is just a tank. It is however built well in comparison to other 70" frames that I have seen at the field. But for 70 inches and under 200 bucks for the airframe... I guess I shouldn't complain.

I was wrong the DLE 30 is the same weight as the MLD 28. Very interreesstinng. How is the OS 160 performing on the Seagull?

What is dry weight regarding engines...the CRRC 40 is only 4 ounces heavier. I am not sure why so many reliable sources recc. the MLD. When their are two larger motors of the same weight.

the os 160 performs supurbly on the seagull. I would not want to give up any performance by switching to a gas motor. I want easy start reliability and that is causing me to wonder about switching to gas, if i had to trade anything, it will not be at the sacrifice of performance of the 160. it is a great combination.

thats too bad .the OS160 is a powerhouse but I want another gasser.I had a 3W 60 for a lanier giant stinger and sold it thinking I was through with gas.well I am eating my words.I would love a 30cc but the pickins are slim.from watching others I would stay away from the Fuji lineup . the satio 180 is great it just happens to be flying another bird and my g23 is okay for my cub but wouldnt do much on the seagull.as for yaks I love the aeroworks quick build series. quality ! I fly alot of 3Dhobby planes but the bigger 70's are really pricey for me.seagull works just fine .if ya find a great gasser in the 30cc area post it .

found a vendor soutern rc engines is taking pre orders for the new DLE30 engine priced at 309 bucks and includes a free 18 inch wood prop. the engine is very powerful and will swing a 19 at 7400 rpm. weight is good.and the CRRC 26 pro is going for 239 bucks and included the igntion(EI)

I am seriously thinking about either one.the ccrc shows props up to 18 inches .either way I think they would be great for the extra 260 yak.

I agree that the DLE30 should be a real nice match. I was planning on an OS 1.60, but that DLE is sounding better and better. you got the link for sothern rc?

From looking at the numbers from the OS 160 "post your tach reading" thread it looks like you are pulling 15 lbs of static thrust versus my 13 lbs with the MLD 28. Whattt.. the Syssa 30 lighter that the MLD 39!. And 17 lbs of thrust on the same prop.

Tele,

I had the OS 1.60 (18x6 prop & perry pump 9000 rpm) on a peak yak (71 inch ws) that weighed 11.6 pounds. It woud hover around 1/2 - 5/8 throttle and pull out very nicely. I assume it would be about the same performance. That Syssa sounds like a real good motor but for 100 bucks less you can get DLE30 and if it is as reliable as its bigger brothers, should be a winner. I replaced the OS 1.60 on the yak with a CRRC 40cc, havent flown it yet though to compare. The 40cc is even cheaper than the DL ( i think 289 through valley view rc) and i bet would be a good match.

CRRC 40cc Link

Hello there!

It seems like nobady has tried the plane with a Saito 150? Could it be more attractive choice in tems of fuel economy compared to the Saito 180? If the weight could be kept to around 11lbs I guess it would fly just fine, what do you think?
I pesonallu just enjoy listening to the four stroke sound..

It should fly it just fine with a Saito 150. I first tried a Saito 180 on it and it was a rocket. I then wanted to go to gas and switch to a Zenoah 26 and it also moves the plane around very well but not with the authority of the Saito. If you are a sport flyer you will be happy with the combo. Hope that helps...

Anyone have a link to the 78" plane besides Seagull Models site as it seems to have been infected with some nasty spyware.

Hi Lou!

Thanks for the reply. I don't fly 3d, my flying style is more like aerobatics or pattern style. What I am looking for is good vertical performance but not a rocket like performance. So do you think, based on your experience, the Saito 150 might allow unlimited vertical, though?

I appreciate all input, thanks!

Just another comment on the topic of what motor to use. I do know that a 18x6 spinning at 7500 is not enough for mine. I just fly IMAC sequence stuff and the MLD is just no enough to pull through the looping maneuvers.

I think for aerobatic and pattern like performance you speak of the satio 150 is fine.I had a satio 150 in my former seagull laser 200 and it flew extremely well .I was going to install my 180 this time as I do love the sound of satio 4 strokes.but I'm crazy sometimes so I have been thinking about the new DLE30.I know its not necessary but I like to be different sometimes.someone says the MLD28 doesnt pull hard enough .but your satio with the right prop will give you flying enjoyment if your not into rockets or 3D.

It was so nice today playing with my Extra, had the field all to myself too. Well i figured out the expert on-board glow thingy. oh how sweet. The expert glow works like a charm when it is hooked up right..... meaning. when using a 1.2volt ni-cad like what comes in our glow ignitors, you can not use a switch between the battery and on-board glow. It has to plug directly into the expert. the battery needs to be fully charged and it will last all day. I am using 2x 1.2volt, for 3000 mah sony. had to recycle it and get it fully charged to be able to use it all day. takes a slow charge. You can however use a 4.8 or 6 volt battery with a switch if you like. Then it has to use the switch in this case to break the voltage down to keep from burning out plugs. i had changed my rx battery from a 2 cell lipo to a 2300 nimh and did not like it. weight difference is 3 ounces and i could tell the difference in flight with the added weight, Plus only got 1 flight and battery was 1/2 gone. So, will be going back to the lipo. I just hate having to take it out at the end of the day to charge, may try a li-ion later this weekend though. other than all that, This extra is one heck of a bird. I am loving it. In fact, i think i will stay with the glow cause it was so easy to start. just flip prop to get pump going and a lil prime, then flip switch on transmitter and flip prop, starts right up sweeeeeeeeeet

I have a NIB expert on board thing.never quite understood its advantage but then my engines always work so I have never bothered to add one.from the sounds of it it doesnt look like a great thing ..I would use either a lipo or a123 battery. soooooo what engine is in it the 180?? got pics..??

The advantage to the expert on board glow is starting for me. I have a DA 50 and starting gas was so easy for me that i wanted my glow engines to start just as easy. flip a switch and flip the prop, it starts. no ignitors or starters to lug around. just a chicken stick and my transmitter. In fact, this engine runs so good. i only use it for starting and then turn it off
