I’m sorry to hear your troubles with the Stearman. I totally agree, sometimes it’s seems that a better idea is to lounge and have a beer instead.

I like the sound of 4 strokes. I have a 125 Saito, but they are messy as hell. It’s the dam crankcase vent that lets all that oil out of the case that gets everywhere.

Hope you get everything worked out with the Stearman. If you have not flown one before, you are in for a treat. It will be the plane you take to the field the most often this summer…….. I least it was for me……..

I’m semi retired and I took last summer off, I was at the field 3 to 4 times a week from about lunch time to nightfall flying my Stearman. Doing all those crazy ass aerobatics all day long. I had more fun than a man should be allowed to have with his toy. Although I brought other planes to the field the Stearman came every time until a tree at the edge of the field jumped up and the Stearman landed in it on final approach. I have asked if I could cut the tree down and there are other members that seconded the motion, as its taken more than its share of planes over the years, but we do not own the land, so the club won’t let us.

One thing I like to share with you is that the Stearman does not need much elevator authority to fly well. I did all those aerobatic tricks in the video with only one inch of travel on the elevator, most of the time I was flying on low rates with ¾ inches of travel. The ruder and aileron were full travel, as far as they would go. Too much elevator and it will snap on you. My C of G was exactly where the manual recommended it to be.

I hope you have many fun filled flights with it.

You can never have enough power, as you can always throttle back.

Thanks for the tips. I hope it flys like the one in Realflight G4. The one in the sim is a dream to fly and will do flat spins 'till the cows come home. I have 7 more years untill I can take early retirement and I am looking forward to having more lesure time. I have more than enough things to keep me busy.

To follow up on tach readings I tached my Fuji 43 today. It has about a gallon of fuel through it now and is turning 7100 with a Xoar 20x8.

Don’t get me wrong here I do not want to bash Fuji, as my Fuji 43 is going into a 80" wingspan stinger in a couple of weeks, so I still think the Fuji has its applications, but it's not the powerhouse that Fuji claims in its manual. ( 8000 RPM and 23bls of thrust with an APC 20x8 prop )

Here are some RPM readings, if anyone out there has more please add them to this thread.

2.5 gallons of gas
20x8 Top Flite = 6800 RPM (1200 ft ASL / 10C temp). 17.5 lbs. of thrust
16x10 3 Blade Master Airscrew = 7600 RPM (1200 ft ASL / 10C temp). 15.4 lbs. of thrust
18x10W APC = 7800 RPM (1200 ft ASL / 10C temp). 19.1 lbs. of thrust

3 gallons of gas
20x6 Mejzlik = 8300 RPM ((600 ft ASL / 16C temp). 20.5 lbs. of thrust

1 gallon of gas
20x8 Xoar = 7100 RPM (this is approx 18.5 to 19 lbs of thrust)

The highest reading on any of the forms I visited when doing my research was 7200 RPM with a 20x8 prop.

Unless someone has a reading with a 20x8 prop that is over 7500 RPM my conclusion is that the Fuji 43 does not have enough torque to turn any 20x8 prop close to 8000 RPM. This does not mean that the Fuji 43 is not a good engine, it just means that Fuji's claims are highly optimistic at best, at worst Fuji's claims are _______ ( you fill in the blank).

I find most over claim the rpm by some amount. I have one Fuji 43 in a RCGuys Decathlon and I am putting another in a GP Giant Stick that I currently have an OS 1.60 on. I am changing my only two glow engines over to gas. I have an SPE 26 on the way as I mentioned I was thinking about doing in the PT17 thread to change it over as well. The heck with waiting untill winter

If your Stinger is the Giant Stinger ARF make sure you re-enforce the area where the wing bolts to the fuselage. I just finished my on Saturday and a gust of wind caught it dong a taxi run causing it to flip over and it just blew apart......

Sorry to hear about your Stinger, hopefully you will repair it and make it stronger than the original. It looks like you have a DL50 on it, It must fly like a bat out of hell…… It really seems that we are long lost twin brothers; we fly the same engines and planes. Talk about co-incidents.

Thanks for the heads up…… I do not have my Stinger yet. I will be picking it up next week. A friend from the Humber Valley Club in Toronto the one with the RC Guys Super Decathlon is giving it to me. He’s flying it with a 40 Brison. Mario has had it for over a year and it’s the first generation Stinger, it’s got a different colour scheme. He beefed up the wall where the front of the wing plugs in and added a couple of dowels. I will need to look at the frame where the back of the wing bolts on, to see how strong it is and add some light ply if it’s a problem on the first generation Stinger.

I will post flying characteristics with the Fuji 43 and my 20x6 Mejzlik prop, once I fly it.

Thanks
Geppino

I have just over a gallon of fuel through my second Fuji43 now. Runs better than the one in my Decathlon. It is showing 7420 rpm with a Xoar Sword 20x8 and has been gaining a little rpm with each tankful. I am curious to see if it gains anymore rpm on Saturday when I go back out flying. I am going to give it two gallons or so and then switch to Saber at 50 to 1. That should show a bit of a gain as well. If it gets up over 7600 I am going to change props. I am gaining a new respect for this engine. Great fun flying my Giant Stick with this engine on it. Who says you shouldn't overpower a plane. BTW it was 30 degrees out (C) and I am at 1500 ft asl.
