googlydoogly -> Tamiya Panther Build (4/15/2008 12:47:16 AM)

Finally decided to start on this build, despite having 4 other incomplete tank builds.[:''(]

This Panther is gonna be primarily gonna become a shelf queen, because I''m more interested in the modeling aspect of this hobby, compared to the RC. But I don''t mind running my tanks outside once in a while. [:D]

Here''s some parts I got from Willy at CustomRCModels. Great guy to deal with! I got the Impact PE set, the metal sprockets, metal sprocket wheel guides, metal mantlet, and the Impact muzzle break, which came free with the PE set.

googlydoogly -> RE: Tamiya Panther Build (4/15/2008 12:53:43 AM)

Here''s a couple of my recent builds. They''re both basically done, I just need to paint and weather a few of their parts.

StumpyBloke -> RE: Tamiya Panther Build (4/15/2008 12:59:47 AM)

Hey! Love the T-34!! Which kit is it?

Rich

googlydoogly -> RE: Tamiya Panther Build (4/15/2008 12:59:49 AM)

Annnd....it''s probably a bad idea to work on two tank builds at once, but I couldn''t help start on my Matorro King Tiger.

I already started by replacing the barrel with a metal one, fixed the bulge on the bottom front hull plate, and removed the side tool mounts in preparation for the Impact PE set that I ordered from ETO

googlydoogly -> RE: Tamiya Panther Build (4/15/2008 1:06:40 AM)

It''s the older Trumpeter/WSN RC without the IR battle system. [:D] That reminds me, I still have to finish the T-34/76 Trumpeter kit I started a while back.[:''(]

streetsquid -> RE: Tamiya Panther Build (4/15/2008 1:11:13 AM)

googlydoogly,
Very nice work, I especially like the chipping on the Tiger. It''s just enough without being overdone.

Just last week I completed a rebuild of the Tamiya Panther. I had a thread going on this forum for most of the build. I personally like to beat my tanks up pretty good, so it''s showing some pretty hardcore wear and tare.

I too used a metal barrel, upgraded sprockets and the Impact (Lion Roar) PE set, or at least some of it. I run my tanks pretty hard, and our battlefield here in Arizona isn''t the easiest on tanks so I opted to leave off some of the super fragile parts and focused on paint and weathering techniques. If you didn''t get a chance take a look and see if there might be something there you might find useful.

Good luck, and please post frequently.

Regards,

Streetsquid

Thanks! I was actually reading your build thread earlier and have it bookmarked now. Your zimmerit and weathering work are amazing![&:]

googlydoogly,
Thanks for the kind words, I think I got lucky as it all came together in the end.

You what they say "sometimes it''s better to be lucky than good" either way hopefully you find something useful there, if you have questions or would like any additional information on anything I posted there feel free to shoot me a PM and I''ll be glad to help in any way I can.

Very nice, I like your paint on the Tiger!

astroboycp -> RE: Tamiya Panther Build (4/16/2008 12:49:02 PM)

How''s the sprocket issue? Have it been solved already?

googlydoogly -> RE: Tamiya Panther Build (5/1/2008 7:04:26 PM)

Sadly, nope.[&o] This Panther will definitely need the metal tracks...which I couldn't afford at the moment.[:D] (Building two tanks at once with all the upgrade parts).

So Here's the basic start of this build. Starting with the tension pulleys. Each pulleys has 9 parts. Good thing there's a good show on TV while I was building this tank. :D

I also installed the suspension housings, torsion bar stays, torsion bars, and suspension arms. Had a bit of a problem with one of the suspension housings, because the srew holes won't line properly. So I had to use brute force. -_-

Tension pulleys installed.

Metal sprocket wheel guides installed. I prefer this because the sculpt is far more detailed than the stock Tamiya parts.

The mechanism deck plate and the two gearboxes installed. I need to remember to break these gearboxes in before I run in outside.

Idlers, sprocket wheels, and the roadwheels installed. Each roadwheels are composed of 9 pieces, including the rubber tires. This is probably the most tedious part of the build.

Up next, installation of the remaining of the electronics, turret assembly, and detailing of the hull. :)

Panther F -> RE: Tamiya Panther Build (5/1/2008 7:34:32 PM)

Brute force, huh? [:D] Nice!!! Now I know what I'm up against with both the Jagdpanther and Panther.

Are you putting any zimm coating on this?

hdbeast -> RE: Tamiya Panther Build (5/1/2008 8:40:43 PM)

Great look start, googlydoogly, keep it coming.[sm=thumbs_up.gif]

pcomm1 -> RE: Tamiya Panther Build (5/1/2008 10:53:29 PM)

Great looking Tiger and T34.

Just a heads up, the Impact Panther drive sprockets were not compatible with the Tamiya Panther kit tracks for my build.

Tamiya also discovered and published that the inside sprockets in some Panther kits are warped. The Jadgpanther kit seems not to have any drive sprocket issues.

You can email Tamiya USA for a free temp fix until you get Impact tracks, if needed, Contact: http://www.tamiyausa.com/articles/feature.php?article-id=333

Again, amazing work.

John

googlydoogly -> RE: Tamiya Panther Build (5/1/2008 11:50:46 PM)

Panther F: Yeah, it's weird. I only had a problem with that one screw hole. All the rest were a breeze to install. And nope, I'm not gonna zimmerit this Panther. I haven't found a Panther that had zimmerit with the late-style exhaust, plus I'm going for a January-February 1945-built Panther.

Thanks hdbeast! :D

pcomm1: Thanks for the info and the link! I'm gonna contact Tamiya soon. :)

Tracks installed, It's not gonna be it's permanent tracks, but I need to put them on to make sure the side skirts will not be a hinder.

Here are the side skirts and the support brackets.

Here's one of the the rear two cable brackets.

Here's a part of the gun cleaning rod case. It's made from two pieces of metal parts that had to be bent into shape. That coin is a dime. Thank God that's the smallest part of this build that I have to handle.

Up next, turret assembly.

Panther F -> RE: Tamiya Panther Build (5/2/2008 12:45:11 AM)

Thanks for the info! I have the same PE set, so it comes with the brackets to mount the tube on the rear deck, huh? Cool! I'm mounting mine the same way too, but I am building the MAN Panther G version. I haven't looked the set over too much but you seem to have a great head start on it!

So tell me, is there really an issue with the rear hull plate/upper hull fitting correctly?

pcomm1 -> RE: Tamiya Panther Build (5/2/2008 1:14:17 AM)

Yes, (true for both Panther and Jadgpanther): check along the plate's "bottom edge and right sides" on the rear deck plate and remove material there, plus the shape of the rear plate is not accurate on the top right side, where it meets and goes flush against the right rear top deck "side". Simple fixes, but proceed with caution and check often as you make adjustments.

Are PE parts appropriate for TBU battle day runners?

googlydoogly -> RE: Tamiya Panther Build (5/2/2008 2:13:56 AM)

Panther F, there is a little fitting issue in the rear hull deck. One side is more flush than the other, as illustrated below:

pcomm1, I thought it was the speaker box that's causing the misalignment, but I'll check again once I've done all the tools and such. Thanks for the heads up!

BTW, I really don't recommend PE parts if you battle. The hull PE detail parts maybe safe enough, but the sideskirts will not last an hour out in the field. They are mounted on flimsly and thin brackets. Heck, I accidentally tore one off...and I was being careful!

hdbeast -> RE: Tamiya Panther Build (5/2/2008 2:21:51 AM)

Looks good, The PE parts are fun to work with aren't they? [:D][:D][:D] If you drill, CA glue and pin each PE part they are very solid, had to move some of mine to make adjustments and there hard to get loose, and that's before you add any epoxy weld lines and paint.

MORE Builds like this needed.[:D]

Gary

googlydoogly -> RE: Tamiya Panther Build (5/8/2008 3:53:23 AM)

Thanks guys! :D

I forgot to post a pic of the electronics assembled inside the tank, minus the receiver.

Here's the recoil unit. This is the worst part of the build for me, because the aftermarket mantlet's gun tube hole is VERY rough and VERY tight. I had to carefully sand inside, and do it slowly, or else I'd take off too much material and cause the barrel to wobble.

Here's the flash unit. It's my first time installing one of these, because I never really like the unit protruding out of the muzzle break. But, I vow that at least one of my Tamiyas would have this, so I decided to put it in. :)

The gun elevation unit.

Turret details, and some little welding work.

The turret is done! Please note that the barrel is in the recoil position, so it's really not that short. :)

googlydoogly -> RE: Tamiya Panther Build (5/10/2008 5:56:12 AM)

Minor update:

To those that have the IMPACT PE set, please make sure you check your references first! IMPACT's instructions leaves alot to be desired, AND some of their parts are waaaaay too thin.

I have their earlier King Tiger PE set, and those are at least twice as thick as the Panther parts. Not only are those parts extremely weak, but in some cases, they're not in-scale at all.

So you have a choice between the Tamiya parts (too thick but durable enough), or the PE parts (too thin AND very fragile).

Like these parts:

I accidentally bumped the rear of my Panther, and those PE parts bent like crazy. When I tried to straighten them, the broke apart completely.[:'(]

Soooo....I decided to modify the rear exhaust. I backdated it a little. I cut the rear exhausts at their base, and took some exhaust pipe from my cannibalized King Tiger.

And scratch-built some exhaust guards out of some spare PE parts.

Success! I just need to add a little more detail to them, but they're basically done. :)

Panther F -> RE: Tamiya Panther Build (5/10/2008 2:10:01 PM)

Lookin' good googlydoogly! I have since received the PE set for my Panther and after seeing your exhaust pics I came to the same conclusion you experienced. PE is weak even on 1/35th, but this is R/C so it will break.

Nice work on modifying the exhaust! [:D] Me likey!!! [sm=thumbs_up.gif]

hdbeast -> RE: Tamiya Panther Build (5/10/2008 8:33:19 PM)

[:D]Me likey also, [:D]

The PE brackets should have been three times that thick to hold that kind of metal in place.

Nice fix.

Gary
