I am borrowing a friend''s 989 to test and try to revive some Nimh batteries. I am not sure I am doing it correctly.

Batteries
7 each = 7.2v 900mah 2/3A (6 cell)
1 each = 7.2v 600mah (6 cell)
4 each = 4.8v 600mah (4 cell)

For the 6 cells, I have the discharge rate set at 4 amps. Every battery seems to discharge in approx 5 seconds or so. Is this right?

For charging, I have it set at 900, 6 cell, 1.2 amps. It charges and then the trickle charge (set at .25 amps) kicks in when the mah is around 150-200. It trickle charges and then ends, but the mah is only shows around 350-400mah. I''ve tried this with known good batteries and the 7.2v batteries never reach 900mah. What am I doing wrong? I''ve charged discharged several times.

I tried the 7.2v 600mah battery on a discharge/charge and it ended up showing something like 745mah. I''m confused.

What would be the proper settings and expected results for the 7.2 and 4.8v batteries?
Thanks
Rob

Ideally, you would like to use a charge/discharge rate of C/10, but who wants to wait that long. I would use nothing more than a 1C charge or discharge rate. So listed below are the setting I would use.

7.2v 900mah 2/3A (6 cell) 0.9 amps charge and discharge
7.2v 600mah (6 cell) 0.6 amps
4.8v 600mah (4 cell) 0.6 amps

The reciever pack you may want to take the time and cycle it at a lower rate, but the above settings should give you a good idea of what the batteries are capable of. Using a 4 amp discharge is putting too much of a load on the battery and it''s causing the voltage to drop, which is tripping off the charger.

No problem...if you set the battery profile up, you can set up an "Auto-Cycle". I would do 3-5 cycles on each. This way you can go back and check the results of each cycle, if you don''t an improvement in capacity then the battery is probably shot.

Tim: One more thing. Any idea of why this occurred?
Thanks, Rob

It's typical of good batteries to have a higher than rated capacity. It could also depend on what you have your peak threshold and discharge cutoff set at.

Hi Tim:
Strange things are happening. I changed the charge/discharge to .9 and ran 3 cycles. When it enters discharge mode, it appears that mah is rising. By the end of the discharge mode it is up around 400. Then when it goes into charge mode, it starts around 3 mah and starts climbing from there. I don't understand.
