Hello fellow flyers.
i have just recently acquired a 1/4 scale cub balsa usa models 10'' wing. Its totally diffrent from what i normally fly i purchased it at a local swap and im trying to get ideas on what to power it with i have a few spare engines but i dont know if they will rip the wings off or not. os1.60 fx or a os 61fx, evolution 1.00 im a 3d fellow so im thinking the bigger the better but i know its not always true.
thanks for your input in advance
chris

Hi Chris
Definitely forget the 61fx Not enough. Evolution would fly it 160 fx Over the top You would have to fly it on one quarter or half power Get yourself a 120 4 stroke or if you have the money get a 160 Twin four stroke Cant beat that combination Only my opinion
Regards
Styk

A small gasser is ideal for a Cub such as a Zenoah G23 or G26.

I flew mine with a Saito 130 twin. It flew it barely OK, my opinion is use the 1.60 and throttle back.

Got a Saito 1.80 on minetoo much. I am trying to sell the 1.80 with intent to replace with Birelli 26cc gas, or BCMA 26cc. I prefer these because they have electronic ignition and fit in with my future plans. Nothing wrong with G23,26.

Got a Magnum 160 twin on mine(Hanger 9). Perfect combination. Not too much power but the extra is there if you need it.

I have a 25% Hangar 9 ARF because I didnt have the time this winter to build the Balsa USA. I know, I am ashamed, ARF. I have a G-26 mag because I didnt want the high consumption rate of the nitro engines and I wanted rock solid reliability. I dont believe you can beat the G-26 in this airplane. .61 Evo........no way. 1.20 four strokes are a good choice I just didnt want to deal with the higher volume of glow fuel at $15.00 per gallon. Even if gas gets to 5 bucks a gallon you use 30% less as compared to glow and I dont have to store it or order it.......

Hello! I fly my Balsa USA 1/4 Cub on a Saito 91 four stroke. There are three of us in our club that all fly on a .91 or a .100 four stroke. With the 91 I can do level knife edge from one end of the field to the other, easily do continuous loops while gaining altitude, and continuous rolls all the way across our field. With this engine the plane is very light and agile. Mine is just over 14 lbs. I also put the CG back about an inch futher than recomended in the plans. This also contributes quite a bit to its agility without sacrificing any of those great Cub flying qualities. The 91 is way more power than it needs for "scale" power. I am a full size pilot and have flown the J3 and supercubs. The J3 is just plain underwhelming in the power department. A 150HP Supercub is about the scale equal of the 91 powered 1/4 scale cub. We use a 15 x 4W apc prop for the best pull from the 91. Jeff D............
