everydayflyer -> FMA Direct Cell Pro 10 Charger (4/16/2008 12:45:31 AM)

For those who do not frequent RC Groups or WattFlyer he is a little data on this latest from FMA.

http://www.fmadirect.com/new_applications/10s_charger.htm

Available in very limited quanties as it keeps going into back orders. Supply chain should be much better in next couple of months ,perhaps sooner.

IMO, it is really more of a 1S-10S charger which can also charge two 1-5S packs at the same time but mostly if they are being used in parallel or series.

Also I feel the 300 watts listed is a bit misleading as it is up to 300 watts input with a 15 volt supply.

It does a great job of dealing with imbalanced batteries and as result posted below indicate it does very well with A123 batteries.

The Firmware is still being tweaked and just keeps getting better and better.

latest Revesions to date

***VERSION 2.01beta 4-2-08*** fixed a memory issue in the 420 point factory tester.

***VERSION 2.02beta 4-2-08*** fixed a PWM issue in the 420 point factory tester.

***VERSION 2.03beta 4-2-08*** fixed a screen refresh issue.

***VERSION 2.04beta 4-5-08*** fixed corrupt cell count check.

***VERSION 2.06beta 4-6-08*** increased compensation for dirty balance connectors when charging with balance wires only.

***VERSION 2.07beta 4-7-08*** added charge rate compensation to the fuel tables. Charging from 1C to 5C gives a more accurate fuel reading.

***VERSION 2.08beta 4-8-08*** improves the charger's ability to read fuel from 1C charge to 5C charge. Uses a recursive fuel adjustment. Fixed a network issue on the PC software.

***VERSION 2.09beta 4-8-08*** makes the charger beep 3 times when a pack reaches 99%. Fixed a LCD refresh delay when choosing amps and chemistry. Adjusted fuel level at the start of the charge.

***VERSION 2.10beta 4-9-08*** fixed a channel 2 fuel issue from V2.09.
***PC SOFTWARE CHANGES***
Added charge optimization status to the charger data files.

***VERSION 2.11 4-9-08*** makes auto amps start at 1.00 Amp. This allows faster auto current calculation.

***VERSION 2.12beta 4-10-08*** trims auto amps to a minimum of 1.5A in A123 Auto Mode.

***VERSION 2.13beta 4-11-08*** Fixed a fuel initialization issue.

Well I have been using this charger for a couple of months and well over a hundred charges now and I must say it does well.

I have charged 3S 500 ,3S1320, 4S3300 LiPolys with it up to 3C. I have charged 4S A123 1100 and 4 and 5S A123 2300s and a couple of other brands of LiFePO batteries in 4,5 and 8 cell packs at up to 10A . It handles them all with ease. My Thunder Power 1010c /210V is getting a much deserved rest after 3 1/2 years of almost daily useage.

I used mine for the first time on Thursday. I used it on two 3700 packs and a 4400 pack. Went flying today and had some great flights on my Ultra Stik 25E. I have a Cellpro 4 also and the 10 is very satisfying. I also bought the Computer kit and it arrived today. Great way to update your software in the charger.

TedMo -> RE: FMA Direct Cell Pro 10 Charger (7/4/2008 9:03:10 PM)

Charles: I have read much about the 123 batteries but all I seem to do is get confused. I did purchase 1- 4cell 2300Ma pack from Mek in their Solderless tube. This I desired to charge on my FMA 10S charger but found I could not do so since I didn't have a node connection on pack. It will not charge through the discharge leads. My question therefore is how are they being charged using The FMA charger. Also I'm confused about these cells in respect to their chemistry. Are they Lith- ions? Or not? I also have an ICE charger which will charge Lith- ions but unsure if this can be used?

TedMo, I just got some A123 packs from Cheap Battery Packs.com. They came with Polyquest nodes so should be easy to charge. Don't the instructions of the 10S deal with charging through the power leads? At the moment I can't find the instruction booklet to check. I haven't used my packs yet as I have to replace the Deans with Sermos.

FMA Li / A123 chargers Balance Pro HD (discontinued) , Cell Pro 4 and Cell Pro 10 all require balancing leads to charge ,period! No balancing leads no charging.

It is fairly simple to add balancing leads to the SPT from MEC if you are handy and fair at soldering. You can order the balancing leads / connectors from FMA . They come with a wiring drawing.

#1 lead goes to pack neg. #2 goes to +- between cell #1 and cell #2 , lead 3 goes to bottom of SPT , lead 4 goes between cell 3 and 4 +- and lead #5 goes to pack positive.

Mark where cell meet, disassemble STPs drill a 3/16 hole where cells meet. Solder 1/8" wide by 1/2" long 0.05 brass shim stock to leads # 2 and 4. Place thes in holes and slide cells against them . All othe leads can be soldered to the correct points.

Note : Be careful handling the cells as they have silver paste on the ends which you do not want to remove as it improves performance.
