OS BGX-1: Recommended Oil Content (Full Version)

Hi, everyone, I just bought a new OS BGX-1 and I read in the instructions that it requires a fuel with at least a 20% oil content. First of all, how critical is this?[8|] How do you tell what the oil content is if it is not on the label? Where do you buy the 20% fuels? What brands are they? Sorry for all the questions, but I have several other OS engines which I have run Omega or Red Max fuels in with out any problems. Most of the fuel I have seen at my LHS have 18% oil content. I generally use 10 or 15 % nitro content as well. Any help would be great, I dont want to break this engine on the wrong fuel from the get go.[:o]

I think OS specifies 20% for all its engines.

This is far more than is actually necessary for a long and happy life but nobody ever broke an engine by using 20% oil so I suspect OS beileve "better safe than sorry" - since they have no idea whether their customers can tune an engine properly or what kind of fuel/oil will be used.

The reality is that most bigger glow engines can go much lower than 20% in fact the large SuperTigre engines recommend about 12% oil from memory.

Just about any of the commercially available 18% fuels should be fine although I''d tend to opt for one that had at least a little castor if only for the sake of reducing the risks of bearing corrosion.

The "big tigres" use 10% oil, but the 2300 and .90 use 18%
All other ST engines use 20%

Hi Pe,

Yeah, I'm aware that lower oil levels are only recommended on the bigger STs but in making the comparison it should be noted that the BGX1 is 35cc the equivalent of a "bigger' ST" :-)

And for what it's worth, I run my ST90s on 12% oil and they *love* it. Remember that manufacturers are *always* conservative because they have to allow for the worst possible oil qualities and engine tuning. Use a better oil, learn how to tune an engine and I've yet to find an engine that doesn't run better with less oil (oh, there is one exception my HP21VT which really does need 20% castor to seal the rotary valve in its head)

But as I said it's pretty hard to damage an engine by using the manufacturer's recommended oil levels.

you put a known weight quantity of fuel in a metal cup and heat it so the methanol evaporates (boils off) weigh the remainder, which is the oil.
weight ratio times 100% is the oil content.

Mark, the only way I know of to determine oil content is the method described by the very learned pe reivers in the previous post. Even this does not tell one the kind of oil in the fuel.

I ordinarily do not purchase fuel that does not specify oil content. I suppose my paranoid part keeps wondering what the manufacturer is trying to hide. If of necessity I use a fuel with unknown oil content I always add a bit of castor.

To find out the oil content just go to the fuel manufacturer homepage and read the oil content. Different fuels from the same manufacturer usually have different names like "omega", "pattern", so just search for the name on the label on your fuel bottle. It is usually specified in the webpage, if not then do it as Pe described.

You should be just fine running what is available locally in your store. If the manual recommends 20%, then the 18% available would be just fine.
The last time I ran a BGX, I remember it liking lower nitro fuels better than higher ones. 10% is more than enough for that engine.
