The web site referenced in the first post shows that Rantoul is cancelled. What's up?

The race was cancelled, not because te site wasnt willing but due to procrastination on the racers not getting their entries in early. These venues take thousands of dollars up front for tent rental, toilets, trash, golf cart rentals, caterers, course workers etc....
It takes a minimum of 30 pre registered racers to secure the funds for the promoter.
These necessary items werent secured due to the above and other reasons.
Rantoul Base was willing to have us, we just dropped the ball.

There is a substitute race scheduled for this week end at El Mirage dry Lake Bed In California.
It is true that a good site is getting harder and harder to find. The USRA has very strict safety guidelines and distance requirements to meet proper safety needs.

Rantoul is a long distance for the majority of the racers to travel (West Coast Racers) due to high fuel costs.
Next year is already being looked at proactively in regards to this situation.
Talks are of three races held more Geographicly pleasing to the majority of the racers.
Discussions include Ohio, (East Coast Venue)
Kansas, (Mid West)
Texas, or California (West Coast).

The down side to this year is we only will get one, (or two if we find a West Coast site), opportunities to race this year.

The upside is the prize money is increased at the Ohio Race, and it is sure to be another great venue for all of us.

The average number of racers showing up in the East and Midwest were around 35.
The average showing up for the West Coast races were around 70.
It is more a Geographical logistics issue than anything else. The USRA sees this and is adjusting for the future.
It takes a lot of time and planning to get these huge planes and support equipment to these races. I spend 8 vacation days a race X 3 a year =24 days off work. Thats the average amount most of us get a year. We wont even talk how much money goes into this!

Its still worth it and I am looking for a West Coast venue yet for this year.
I gotta race.
I barely fly any of my other stuff. So I am willing to spend the time and money to do what I love.
You other racers can understand that. It becomes a way of life and not just a hobby!!
