winglift -> Fiberglassing floats (4/17/2008 9:30:52 PM)

I have built some floats and want to fiberglass them. I have 3/4oz glass, but need recommendations on resin to use and any other tips.

Thanks.

Hey Winglift,

You didn't say what you built your floats from. I made a set for a quarter scale and one for a 60 size. I used heavy glass for the big set, and used either 1/2 or 3/4 oz glass for the smaller ones. I used poly vinyl resin (PVR) for both. Works really good. I suggest PVR. I am about to do my first surface glass and paint job on a scale project, but am unsure about using that much PVR on it or should I use epoxy. Might be a bit heavier than other materials, but it does a good job. Some people report good results from using Poly-crylic. I have used it on smaller electrics, but don't know if it would dry and set up enough for use on floats. Maybe somebody here can post info about that.

Good Luck, Will

P.S. I just left a job in Indy last week after 2 years.....Nice place ....I 'm gonna miss it a little.

Thanks "Bluehead" for the tips. I made them from balsa and bottoms are thin ply. They are actually from an old Bridi kit. Good luck in your new venture in NY, quite a change from Indiana I suppose.
