No worries! Its always good to discuss different approaches. yeah the stock rib really is rubbish IMHO. However, using it an epoxying 1/16 either side mean't I was more accurate when trimming everything to fit, as I hade the original laser cut rib in there to assist. All fits like a glove!

It's kind of hard to believe that 15 years or more have gone by and Goldberg hasn't upgraded that piece.....unless they are still selling kits that were cranked out in the 1990s?
I wonder how this kit measures up in total sales compared with others that were sold in the .60 size [since this plane first came out as a kit].

Thats an interesting question and I would be intriqued to know the answer! Either way I guess people are still building this kit as it appears to be the only Ultimate kit in this size on the market. I am sure using a smaller engine would not precipitate all these mods I am doing, but kit quality is an issue....espcially when people like Great Planes are generally putting kits out of a far higher quality.

I am almost tempted to say that, had I the choice now I may have gone with the GP Super Skybolt kit. However This will be great I am sure. Maybe next time!

...And then there were two!

Progress is coming along good! Next step is to fit the sheath in the top wing for the cabane/pin assembly, mounting the servos in the bottom wing, finnishing the trailing edges (ailerons on both wings) and glassing the centre. I am going with a 4" wide glass section. I don't feel comfortable using the stock 3/4" tape supplied with the kit, especially with a 120 two stoke on the front. Am using 1oz cloth so it is thin enough to keep the weight down, but strong enough with the added width.

I am still wondering about these servo lead extensions. I am using a 6v 2000mah Nimh battery (5 cell), and these servos apparently suck the juice so must have a high current draw. Is standard guage extension leads sufficient or should I be using heavy duty ones? same goes with the switch?

Put the final cap strips on all wings and now in the process of installing the servos in the bottom wing. I will not sheet the centre on the bottom wing yet as I have decided that I will order some heavy duty servo extension leads and switch. I might be able to get away with standard guage wires but with 5 high torque servos running at 135 oz and at 6v I rather just play it safe on the electronics front.

Oh yes, the other pic of the wing tip above was to show that the number 9 ribs used on the wing tips were grossly undersized, so I used my own 3/16 balsa sheet which was ever so slightly thicker as well. Looks better I think

Unfortunately there are many parts in the kit that just do not seem to be the right size, but it is still a great kit to build, and a great bip to fly, so any extra effort will be well rewarded.
I finally finished the new engine installation, took me less than one hour and my son Daniel (4 years old kid) helped me at all times.
Here some pictures:

Looks great! I am inerested to know why you didn't use the 90 degree adapter on the muffler? Was it a case of looks or simply the cowl not allowing you to do so? If thats the case I think I will just bite the bullet and go with the bisson pitts! DO you think using a check valve on the muffler pressure line would result in too much tank pressure?

Cowling was already cut for the Magnum exhaust and this result the perfect set up with very few new cut outs. I did want to use the 90o adapter but I had to do several new openings and I refused to do it. I am planning to order a new fiberglass cowling and a pitts muffler, just cosmetics.
About the check valve, I will keep things simple and will try with out it (I am very confident using the stock muffler). I have read some opinions regarding the lack of pressure when using a pitts style muffler but nothing concrete. A check valve will not hurt on weight or space so it could be an assurance. Your engine may require to be leaned because of the constant pressure but that is it.

yeah that is true. I have heard mixed things about the bisson pitts and having put sooo much work into this puppy I am just not sure about it.

Here are afew new pics. Have both servos mounted in the wings now so I may start on the fuse and leave hinging the ailerons till later (fuse is my favourite part to build ). The servo installation on the bottom wing is based upon higleys removeable idea. It works great and is solid.

I will be making a new firewall out of 1/4" aircraft ply for strength with the 120. Although I could just use the stock pieces and glue together with the cutouts in place...what ya'll think?

Its saturday here so managed to get even more done as the below photos show. Basic fuse is now framed...choice! I chose to use a great planes 1.20 - 1.80 sized (large) engine mount as I know and trust them, and the stock one supplied with the kit looked a little small for the power this engine produces. I see you have maintained the stock mount Alfredo so I will be interested to see how it goes...I am sure it will be fine and I am just being paranoid! I will still use some washers under the mount to obtain the required right thrust.

The fuse fit together well aside from a few misalignments which I corrected. It will need alot of sanding and abit of filler thats for sure, especially at the joints. I have also epoxied my custom 1/4" firewall to the fuse so now I have stopped for the day while that dries overnight. Really enjoying this build.

You can also see how much scrap ply is left after punching out the fuse cut outs...I don't think they were thinking of the Amazon when designing this kit thats for sure

Hi, I finally have broken in the OS 1.20 AX. I used a 16 x 8 APC prop. I used the method described in the manual (10 secs. rich 4 stroke tone, 10 secs. 2 stroke tone), after 2 tanks the engine was taching 9000, I richen it to obtain 8,800 and has a nice low at 1,800.
Now I need to aquire a fisher scale to measure the thrust/weight, but that is an older intention, perhaps this summer I will aquire one of those.
Plane is now close to 8 Lbs.
